MADISON, Wis. – The Air Force cross country team wrapped up competition at the prestigious Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational this afternoon (Oct. 13) in Madison, as the men and women finished 19th and 31st in their respective championship races against some of the nation's elite.
Senior Sean Maison paced the men, as he finished 49th in the 280-runner event that featured athletes from 23 of the Top 30 teams in the nation. The senior completed the 8K circuit around a cold and wet Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in a time of 24:07.2. The Falcons placed two more runners in the top 85, as sophomore Max Sannes finished 53rd in 24:08.2 and senior Eli Bennett clocked a time of 24:18.2 to place 83rd. Junior Jason Renze added a 132nd-place time of 24:34.5 and senior Luke Combs rounded out the Falcons' 487-point outing after crossing the finish line in a time of 24:49.8 (174th).
The women, who tallied 827 points in a 252-runner event that included 22 of the nation's top 30 teams, were led by junior Halle Hamilton, who finished 103rd with a 6K time of 21:04.6. Classmate Ally Peterson clocked a time of 21:18.9 to finish 122nd, while senior Rachel Crytser added a top-200 finish in 22:04.6 (199th). Junior Tiaree Towler clocked a time of 22:11.8 to finish 209th, while senior Rebecca Wusinich rounded out the scoring lineup with a 212th-place time of 22:15.4.
"Today was a tough day for both teams," Air Force's director of track & field and cross country Ryan Cole said. "This weekend can also be productive moving forward, as we were able to see how we stack up with some of the conference teams we'll race again in two weeks. But today is definitely a gut check. We'll find out a bit more about this group by seeing how we come off this. I'm confident this is a resilient group."
Air Force returns to competition in two weeks (Friday, Oct. 27), when it heads to Eagle, Idaho, for the 2023 Mountain West Cross Country Championships.
