U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo - After a major upset win over a ranked San Diego State program last weekend, the Air Force women's tennis team aims to punctuate its early conference schedule with two more marquis victories, as the Falcons' next stop takes them to Albuquerque for a weekend facing New Mexico and No. 58 Fresno State.
Falcons at a Glance:
The Falcons (5-8, 1-1 MW) split the opening weekend of Mountain West competition, falling to UNLV 4-1 on March 25 before upending No. 49 San Diego State, 4-3 the following day.
Air Force enters the weekend a combined 51-50 in dual competition.
The Falcons, after opening to an 8-1 team record in dual doubles play this spring, managed a return to form to open Mountain West play, going 2-0 in the opening weekend to improve to 10-3 in a best-of three format.
Falcon duos combine for a 21-10 dual doubles record, with Air Force courts one and three pairings of junior Isabella Flodin/freshman Abby Cotuna and Sydney Fitch/Alexis Odom currently at 7-2.
In singles competition, freshman Arianna Van Houweling is a team-best 8-3 on the season, after claiming a straight-set win on line six in Air Force's win over SDSU.
New Mexico:
The Lobos, after starting 6-1 on the season, dropped both matches in Vegas last weekend in their conference debut, falling 4-1 to San Diego State and 4-0 to UNLV.
UNM is a combined 24-5 in dual doubles, and 31-18 in singles play. Maud Vandeputte leads singles output for the Lobos at 6-0 on lines three and four.
Fresno State:
Fresno opens its 2022-23 MW road schedule after earning a pair of wins at home against No. 54 BYU and a shutout victory over No. 42 Colorado State.
The Bulldogs fell 4-3 at home to Wyoming on March 26 - their first regular-season conference loss since 2021, which snapped a 15-match regular season conference winning streak for the Bulldogs.

The Falcons closed the opening weekend of Mountain West play on the highest of notes after grinding out a 4-3 win over reigning Mountain West Champion No. 49 San Diego State on Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Center in Las Vegas.
The Falcons improved to 10-3 in doubles behind wins on courts one and three for Sydney Fitch/Alexis Odom and Arianna Van Houweling/Courtney Swift. Fitch/Odom took SDSU's Andjela Skrobonja/Andreea Velcea, 6-4, handing the Aztec pair their first doubles loss of the spring; Van Houweling/Swift improved to 2-0 as a pair after debuting on Saturday against UNLV, defeating Rania Azziz/Cecile Morin 6-4.
Air Force found success on courts three (Odom), five (Abby Cotuna) and six (Van Houweling) to clinch the 4-3 team win, with Odom and Van Houweling earning straight-set victories to keep the Falcons out in front.
Cotuna, after falling 6-4 in her first set against Morin, claimed a 7-6 win in the second and finished Morin off, 6-2, in the third, handing Moring her first loss of the dual season.
