Falcons Claim Two Events in Season Opener at Oklahoma

NORMAN – Air Force posted a 382.750 in the season opener, falling behind host Oklahoma with 413.600. Patrick Hoopes and Erich Upton claimed first place in the pommel horse and all-around, respectively.
The Falcons had their best showings on the vault (68.850) and pommel (66.800). Upton led the Falcons in the vault with a 14.450 and fourth-place finish in the event. Teammates Bryan Woffiden and Garrett Braunton had Air Force's next top scores with 13.800 each. Hoopes claimed first-place in pommel with an impressive 14.350. Sam Brown claimed third with a career-best 13.950. Jack Matlock tied for fifth with 13.700.
Braunton led Air Force in the floor exercise with 13.550 for a fourth-place finish while Upton finished tied for fifth (13.250). The Falcons had a tough day on the still rings, finishing in positions six through 10. Braunton (13.000), Tai Gopaul (12.850), and Upton (12.750) were the top the three AF finishers in the event.
On the parallel bars, Upton led the Falcons with a 13.150. Braunton led the squad on the high bar tied for fourth with a 13.500. When the final tabulations were made, Upton finished atop the all-arounders (79.300), while Braunton (77.050) and Gopaul (74.200) finished second and third, respectively.
Next up, Air Force will host the competitive Rocky Mountain Open on Saturday, January 20. Action in Cadet West Gym is slated for a 6 p.m. MT start.
