U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – It was a night of peaks and valleys for Air Force Women's Basketball on Friday night, as the Falcons led late, gave up their lead and was forced to put away UC San Diego in overtime, defeating the Tritons, 67-64, in Clune Arena.
Sophomore Jayda McNabb earned a career high 17 points (4-15 FG, 7-10 FT), while posting her second double-double of the season, adding 10 rebounds along the way. It was a second-chance layup in deep traffic during the overtime period which bought back Air Force a lead which it held to the final buzzer. Senior Madison Smith and junior Milahnie Perry both added 12 and 15 to the scoreboard, marking Perry's 24th consecutive double-digit game.
Defensively, the Falcons forced UC San Diego into a season high 29 turnovers on 18 steals, generating 28 points along the way. Eight Falcons logged a steal in the contest, with senior Jo Huntimer notching five takeaways to match a team high for the season.
Opening the game, Perry, looking to get her jumper in play early, got the Falcons out to their fastest start of the season with a quick release from the elbow. A 3-3 to start from Perry and Smith and 4-4 as a team forced UCSD into a quick timeout, down 10-2. The Tritons settled into their game, putting up eight straight to tie.
Keelie O'Hollaren matched a UCSD three-pointer to reclaim a Falcon lead; On the following Triton possession, the sophomore was able to disrupt her opponent's passing lane, getting the steal and a layup on the fast break. A 6-0 Triton run in the Air Force paint left the game tied at 19-all at the end of the first quarter.
Air Force worked its way into a seven-point lead in the second quarter, but found itself tied again with UCSD going down the final seconds of the half. Following the directive of associate head coach Adam Wardenburg from the sideline, Smith, with two seconds to go, inbound the ball to McNabb, who kicked it back out to Smith for a walk-off three along the left wing as time expired, lifting Air Force to a 38-35 halftime lead.
In the third, the Falcons began to distance themselves on the scoreboard, creating a 21-15 scoring advantage behind nine UCSD turnovers. Smith logged three of the Falcons' six steals in the quarter, getting to the line for an easy four points. McNabb went 3-3 and one from beyond the arc for seven third quarter points, helping lift Air Force to as much as a 14-point lead.
After building a sizeable lead, it was a massive scoring drought for the Falcons that ultimately left Air Force in an overtime situation with the Tritons; The Falcons, after an O'Hollaren jumper at the 1:22 mark, went without a field goal for almost 14 minutes of play and scoring one point for the entire fourth quarter, as UCSD spent the fourth chipping away at its deficit, eventually tying the game at 60-all with six seconds remaining in regulation.
In overtime, UCSD bought its first lead of the game since the early minutes of the first quarter and scoring the first four points to build a 64-60 lead. A jumper from sophomore Alexis Cortez snapped the Falcons out of their scoring woes, pulling Air Force back within a point with 2:49 remaining. McNabb, earning the steal on what could have been a game-winning possession for UCSD, also earned the offensive board on the other side after a Perry missed shot, then made the second-chance basket to give the Falcons the ultimate lead. With 19 seconds to go, the Tritons sent Perry to the free throw line, who made both attempts to secure the win.
