PHOENIX – Air Force won 10 races to claim a team victory, 199-154, in a two-day meet with the Grand Canyon Lopes, November 8-9, in Fr Edward A. Reese Aquatic Center. Falcons claimed 30 finishes within the top three.
"The team really stepped up and raced/dove well over the last two days," exclaimed head coach Colleen Murphy. "It was a great meet that allowed them to see the results of their hard work over the last few months, we are so excited to get a little rest as we head into our mid-season invitational."
Hanani Dona and Ella Martin raced to first and second places, respectively, giving the Falcons their first win of the meet. Dona paced to a 4:27.80 top finish.
The Falcons were dominant in the 500 freestyle and 200 freestyle. In the 500 free Air Force won first place through fifth behind Katie Andrist's 4:59.86. Teammates Lily Larson, Lauren Arnold, Naomi Furman, and Brynn Bond swam to second through fifth, respectively. Andrist also swam to first place in the 1,000 free (10.14.55).
In the 200 free, Larson claimed the top spot with a 1:51.12, finishing ahead of teammates Kirsten Lee, Arnold, Ryan Mills, and Abby Turner who finished second through fifth, respectively.
Maeve Linscott swam to first place in the 200 backstroke, clocking a 2:18.52 in the effort. The 400 free relay team made up of Mills, Turner, Alex Clark, and Larson swam to first by a two-second margin (3:25.06) setting a GCU pool record.
Alex Cark and Kai-Min Tsuei rounded out the first-place finishers, winning the 200 IM (2:04.29) and 100 backstroke (56.57), respectively.
On the diving boards, freshman standout diver Chloe Perkins had success on the 3-meter dive, placing first with a 273.45, just ahead of teammate Annaliese Cundiff who placed second with a 255.98. On the 1-meter, Kacey Hu performed to top finish with a 262.35.
"This week has been stressful with the snowstorm and making it to this meet, but the team took advantage of a great opportunity to suit up and swim fast at sea level," Murphy continued. "They were doing the little things right and we finished every race really strong, we won so many close finishes and showed that we are in great shape!"
Next up, the Falcon men's and women's teams will take a small break in action as they prepare for mid-season invitationals. The men's team will travel to College Station, Texas, to compete at the Art Adamson Invitational, while the women's team takes the fight to Houston, Texas, to compete at the Phil Hansel Invitational. Both meetings start Wednesday, November 20, and conclude on Friday, November 22.
