Air Force Soars to Victory over Army and Navy

FRISCO, Texas – Air Force posted a season-high 397.250 to best Navy (390.100) and Army (382.500) at the All-Academies, Saturday evening in the Ford Center at The Star. The Falcons retain the inter-service rivalry title for the second-straight year and for the sixth time in the last 10 competitions.
Air Force had its best moments on the pommel horse, scoring an Academy record in the event under the new scoring system (69.700). Three Falcons claimed the top-spots in the event, led by pommel specialist Patrick Hoopes' stellar 15.200. Teammates Sam Brown (14.450) and Jack Matlock (14.050) finished second and third, respectively— both achieving career-best scores in the effort.
The Falcons scored an impressive 69.150 on the vault for another season-best mark. Junior Erich Upton claimed the title in the event with a season-best 14.650. Teammate Garret Braunton followed up with a second-place finish (14.350) and a new season-best mark. Bryan Woffinden, who finished tied for sixth, scored an impressive 13.900 for a season-best score.
Air Force was exceptional on the parallel bars as well, scoring 68.300 and claiming two of the top-three positions in the event. Upton claimed the title with a 14.000, while Charlie Miles finished third with a personal career-best 13.900.
On the floor exercise, the team scored a 67.300, led once again by Upton who claimed the title in the event with a career-high 14.500. Zavel claimed third with a solid 13.900 performance.
Air Force claimed second and third place on the still rings behind Navy's Will Champagne. The squad posted a 63.450 in the event. The Falcons didn't hit their expectations on high bar (59.350), but still had two athletes in the top-five, led by Zavel's second-place finish (13.00).
The Falcons claimed the top-three spots in the all-around tally, led by Upton (79.450), Braunton (79.300), and Zavel (78.400).
Next up, Air Force will send forth top performers to the Winter Cup, February 23-25. The Falcons return to team action against army West Point, March 2.
