CLOVIS, Calif. -- The Air Force men's track and field team easily captured their third-straight Mountain West Outdoor title this evening (May 11), as they wrapped up three days of conference competition with the second-highest winning score in nearly 20 years and the largest margin of victory since 2009.
Backed by two more individual titles, the men sent nine to the podium and accounted for 22 scoring finishes on Championship Saturday. Completing the conference meet with 226.50 points, Air Force separated itself from the rest of the conference by 69 points to secure its third-straight title – and its eighth in the last 12 outdoor championship meets.
For the third time in as many days, Air Force opened the competition with an event title. Sophomore Texas Tanner, who kicked off the Falcons' championship haul with a win in the hammer throw on Thursday, returned to the top of the podium on Saturday after winning the discus with a distance of 57.75 meters (189'6"). With the win, Tanner became the third Falcon to win the MW title in the discus – and the second in as many years, while leading Air Force to a pair of scoring finishes in the event, as senior Gerrit Tamminga added a fifth-place distance of 52.51 meters (172'3").
Junior Darek Hackett successfully defended his conference title in the 400-meter hurdles in record-setting fashion. Crossing the finish line in a time of 50.03, Hackett became the conference's first repeat champion in the intermediate hurdles since 2016-17 and crushed his own Air Force and All-Academy Records by 0.23 seconds. For the second-straight year, Hackett and classmate Cameron Breier teamed up for a 1-2 finish in that event, as Breier clocked the fourth-fastest time in program history (51.08) to take second.
Junior Javin Bostic picked up a pair of individual silver medals this evening, while teaming up with sophomore Jettason Rose, senior Jackson Connelly, and freshman Jace Martin for the third-fastest 4x100-meter relay in Air Force history (40.02) and a runner-up finish. Bostic and Connelly also both scored in the 100- and 200-meter races, while Rose joined the pair on the scoring line of the 200-meter dash. Bostic posted a 10.27 to take second in the 100-meter dash, before a 0.009 differential (20.621-20.630) separated first and second in the 200-meter dash. Connelly finished seventh in the 100-meter dash (10.58) and eighth in the 200-meter sprint (22.00), while Rose placed sixth following a 21.13 finish.
In addition to his victory in the intermediate hurdles, Hackett led a trio of Falcons to scoring finishes in the high hurdle event. Hackett finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.05 – a 0.001 tiebreak over senior Philip Hundl (14.045-14.046), while senior Seth Meador finished sixth in 14.13.
The 4x400-meter relay, which placed second in 3:10.44, was fully comprised of Falcons contributing to their second scoring finish of the day. While Breier and Hundl ran the two middle legs, freshman leadoff James Warmbrod IV captured a fourth-place time of 47.19 (No. 16 all-time at Air Force) in the 400-meter dash and senior anchor Alex Patton finished fourth in the 800-meter run after clocking a time of 1:50 flat.
Senior Sean Maison and sophomore Ben Scheller both scored for the Falcons in the 1500-meter run, as the pair finished fourth (3:45.24) and seventh (3:47.53), respectively, while senior Eli Bennett medaled in the 5000-meter run for the second-straight year after finishing third in a time of 13:58.49.
Junior Robert Postell earned a trip to the awards podium in the pole vault, as Air Force scored in every field event contested on Saturday. With a clearance of 4.87 meters (15'11¾"), Postell tied for third in the 13-vaulter competition – and led Air Force to a pair of scoring marks, as Wyatt Curl, who scored for the men in the decathlon and high jump yesterday, finished sixth with a height of 4.72 meters (15'5¾"). Senior Brandon Lindner, silver medalist in Friday's long jump, added an eighth-place distance of 14.78 meters (48'6") in the triple jump.
On the women's side, Air Force finished 10th with 34 points.
Junior Ally Peterson earned a trip to the podium in the 5000-meter run, as she used a furious sprint to the finish line to secure a bronze medal with a time of 16:15.30. Peterson was one of two Air Force scorers in that event, as sophomore India Jones, doubling back from Thursday's 10K, finished seventh in 16:38.95.
The Falcons also earned multiple scoring finishes in the 800-meter run, as senior Ava Gilliana and freshman Liliane Aittama finished sixth (2:07.42) and eighth (2:08.59), respectively. Senior Rebecca Wusinich recorded an eight-second PR (4:24.35) to finish sixth in the 1500-meter run and move into fifth on the Academy's all-time standings, while junior Taylor Rioux improved her own Air Force No. 3 time (54.31) to score for the Falcons in the 400-meter dash (seventh).
Air Force returns to action on May 22-25, when select athletes head to Fayetteville, Ark., for the NCAA West Prelim.
