Falcons Head to California for Mountain West Outdoor Championships

Championship season begins for the Air Force track and field team this week, as the squad travels to Clovis, Calif., for the 2024 Mountain West Outdoor Championships. The three-day meet gets underway on Thursday, May 9, and continues through Saturday, May 11, at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
MEET INFORMATION
The 2024 Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held May 9-11 at Veterans Memorial Stadium on the campus of Buchanan High School in Clovis, California (1560 N. Minnewawa Ave.). Competition begins for the Falcons at 9:30 a.m. (PT) on Thursday – a complete schedule of events can be found on Page 2 of this release. Daily tickets are $15 for adults and $11 for students. For fans unable to attend, the meet will be streamed live on the Mountain West Network and MW App, while real-time results will be available through Record Timing and updates will be posted to Air Force social media sites (@af_tfxc) throughout the weekend. WHO'S WHO
The Mountain West Outdoor Championships will feature 11 women's teams (Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Nevada, New Mexico, San Diego State, San Jose State, UNLV, Utah State, Wyoming) and the men's teams from Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, New Mexico, San Jose State, Utah State and Wyoming.
HISTORY 101
The men have captured seven of the last 11 team titles at the outdoor championships (2012, 2013, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2022, 2023). Individually, the Falcons have been at the top of the MW Outdoor award podium 103 times – highlighted by a program-best eight conference titles at the 2015 meet. Jamiel Trimble is the Falcons' most decorated MW Outdoor champion with eight gold medals (five individual, three relays). Highlighted by a program record 27 top-three finishes in 2017, the Falcons have accounted for 346 all-conference selections. Air Force currently holds seven of the conference's Championship Meet Records, including the men's 200-meter dash (Trimble, 20.33 in 2017), men's 1500-meter run (Sean Maison, 3:39.68 in 2023), women's 5000-meter run (Mahala Norris, 15:39.13 in 2021), men's 3000-meter steeplechase (Bryce Lentz, 8:40.45 in 2022), women's 3000-meter steeplechase (Norris, 9:44.10 in 2021), men's pole vault (Cale Simmons, 5.53m in 2012), and women's javelin throw (Dana Pounds, 59.64m in 2006).
AROUND THE CONFERENCE
Four Falcons – Javin Bostic (100-meter dash: 10.14), Darek Hackett (400-meter hurdles: 50.26), Texas Tanner (discus throw: 59.33m, hammer throw: 72.36m) and Joe Nizich (javelin throw: 67.15m) – and the men's 4x400-meter relay (3:08.87) concluded the regular season with conference-leading marks in their respective events, while Air Force combined for 35 top-five performances in the conference standings.

In addition to the Falcons competing at the conference meet in Clovis, three Falcons (Zach Ayers, Jett Knight, Max Sannes) will travel to Azusa, Calif., for the Franson Last Chance Meet at Cougar Stadium on the campus of Azusa Pacific. The Falcons' trio of 5000-meter runners are tentatively scheduled to begin competition at 7:35 p.m. (PT) on Friday, May 10. Live results will be provided by FinishedResults.com.
AIR FORCE IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
Headlined by a Top 10 ranking from Texas Tanner (No. 9 in the hammer throw, 237'5"), three Falcons are listed among the NCAA's Top 25 in the May 6 TFRRS rankings. Tanner holds a second top-20 placement in the discus throw (194'8", 20th), while Darek Hackett is ranked No. 17 in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 50.26 and Luke Combs is listed 25th in the 10,000-meter run following a 28:24.84 finish.
#SQUADGOALS
The men's hammer throw is ranked in the nation's Top 5 in the May 7 edition of the USTFCCCA #EventSquad rankings – a list which is determined by the cumulative season-best marks from a team's top-four athletes in the national descending order list. Texas Tanner, Gerrit Tamminga, Cooper Stroka and Massimo Grisotto have recorded a combined distance of 249.75 meters – the best distance outside of a Power 5 squad. The men are also ranked among the nation's top-15 in the discus throw (12th) and both hurdle events (13th, 110-meter hurdles; 13th, 400-meter hurdles).
FIVE FORMER FALCONS NAMED TO MOUNTAIN WEST'S 25TH SEASON TEAM
05-07-24 | Five standout graduates were named to the Mountain West's 25th Season Team for outdoor track and field. Sam Gilman, Michael Rhoads, Cale Simmons and Jamiel Trimble were four of the 25 members of the men's all-anniversary team, while national steeplechase champion Mahala Norris represented Air Force on the women's team.

05-03-24 | The men's 200-meter sprint squad accounted for five of the 12 fastest times in Air Force history at the Air Force Twilight Open on May 3. Javin Bostic matched his career-best – and No. 2 time – with a winning 20.67, while Jettason Rose added the program's fifth-fastest time (20.92) and Jace Martin debuted at No. 10 on the all-time list with a time of 21.17 to sweep the top three. Jackson Connelly added a time of 21.22 to move into No. 11 and James Warmbrod IV debuted at No. 13 after finishing in 21.24. Rose, Connelly, Martin and Bostic also combined for the third-fastest 4x100-meter relay in program history, as they finished in 40.07.
COMING UP
The Falcons will return to action on May 22-25, when select athletes head to Fayetteville, Ark., for the opening round of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The four-day West Prelim, held at John McDonnell Field at the University of Arkansas, will feature the top 48 athletes in each event. The list of national qualifiers will be announced following the conference championships.
