U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Holy Cross scored the final three goals of the game for a 6-3 win over Air Force in an Atlantic Hockey America game, Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Cadet Ice Arena.
Air Force (11-16-1, 8-10-0) opened the scoring just 78 seconds into the game as Nick Remissong and Brendan Gibbons had a 2-on-1. Gibbons set up Remissong for his second of the series and fourth of the season at 1:18. A rebound goal by Andrew DeCarlo appeared to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead, but after review, the goal was disallowed due to contact with the goaltender.
Holy Cross (13-11-2, 12-4-2 AHA) scored three goals in a span of 98 seconds late in the period. With 2:07 left in the period, Matt Kursonis won a faceoff in the offensive zone and Matt DeBoer tied the game with a wrister from the top of the left circle. Forty-one seconds later, the Crusaders struck on the power play. Liam McLinskey, the conference's leading goal scorer, skated into the slot and drew a crowd. McLinskey slid the puck to a wide open Devin Phillips in the right circle for a 2-1 lead at 1:26. Crusader Jack Seymour's breakaway shot was saved, but the Crusaders kept on the pressure on and Ty Gagno tipped in a shot from Seymour with 29 seconds left in the first.
Air Force tied the game with two goals in a span of 1:46 early in the second period. Senior Mitchell Digby forced a turnover in the neutral zone, skated in 1-on-4 and scored his first career short-handed goal at 4:47. The Falcons tied the game when Beau Janzig set up Clayton Cosentino with some space. Cosentino slid the puck to Anthony Yu and the freshman scored his first career goal at 6:33 to tie the game at 3-3. The Crusaders answered 70 seconds later on the power play. McLinskey and Phillips sent pucks to the net creating a flurry of bodies in front of Guy Blessing. Kursonis punched in the rebound at 7:43 for a 4-3 lead.
Holy Cross took a 5-3 lead at 6:00 of the third on a 2-on-2 as McLinskey scored from Stockfish and Phillips. Air Force pulled the goalie with 4:55 left, but Michael Abgrall scored into the empty net at 18:34 to make up the final margin.
Air Force outshot Holy Cross, 31-25. HC was 2-for-6 on the power play while AF was 0-for-4. Crusader Thomas Gale had 28 saves while Guy Blessing had 19.
"They are a good, experienced team and they took advantage of our mistakes," head coach Frank Serratore said. "We were way too loose and disconnected. We had some chances, but we gave up way too many chances and we had no answer for their power play. Our guys try hard and they care, but we need to play smarter and more together. The bottom line is they were better than us."
Air Force continues its four-game home stand by hosting RIT, Jan. 31-Feb. 1, at the Cadet Ice Arena.
