U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – In a physical, hard-fought game from start to finish, Holy Cross earned a 3-2 win over Air Force in an Atlantic Hockey America game, Friday, Nov. 14, at the Cadet Ice Arena. Holy Cross extended it unbeaten streak to six games and ended Air Force's four-game winning streak.
Holy Cross (6-5-1, 6-1-1 AHA) opened the scoring at 4:59 of the first period when Jack Seymour put back a rebound of Ty Gagno's shot. Late in the period, a five-minute major was called on Air Force, but the Falcon penalty kill got the job done, allowing just one shot on goal with two blocked shots.
In a scoreless second period, the Falcon penalty kill had to come up big again. Holy Cross had a 5-on-3 for 1:23, but the Falcons blocked two shots and Dominik Wasik made a pair of saves. Air Force killed three power plays in the second period, but the Crusaders held the 1-0 lead after 40 minutes.
Midway through the third period, Ty Gagno took a puck off the wall and scored with a wrister from the top of the right circle for a 2-0 lead at 12:15. After Mason McCormick drew a penalty, Air Force pulled the goalie with 2:31 left for a two-man advantage. Nick Sajevic took a shot that was saved, but McCormick put back the rebound to cut the Crusader lead to 2-1 with 2:18 left. Air Force (5-5-1, 2-3-0 AHA) pulled the goalie again, but this time Seymour netted his second of the game, an empty-netter with 1:36 left for a 3-1 advantage. The Falcons were not done yet. With the extra attacker on, Sajevic won a faceoff in the offensive zone and Chris Hedden slid the puck to the center point. Nolan Cunningham's one-timer with 51 seconds left cut the lead to 3-2, but the Falcons could not find the equalizer.
Air Force outshot Holy Cross, 35-24. Wasik made 21 saves while Connor MacKenzie made 33 for the Crusaders. Air Force was 1-for-3 on the power play and killed all four of the Crusader man-advantages.
"This was a good, hard-fought game that had tremendous energy both ways," head coach Frank Serratore said. "It was a battle, just like a playoff game. Other than the penalties, especially that five-minute major, I loved our effort. I'm proud of our guys. They fought hard. We just had a hard time getting rewarded for our effort until late in the game. Holy Cross competed and played some big-time hard hockey. They are not easy to play against, but neither were the Falcons tonight.,"
Air Force and Holy Cross conclude the two-game series on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 7:05 pm MT at the Cadet Ice Arena.
