U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Holy Cross scored two goals in the first period and added two empty-netters late for a 4-1 win over Air Force in an Atlantic Hockey America game, Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Cadet Ice Arena.
Holy Cross' top line scored the first two goals of the game. The Crusaders (7-5-1, 7-1-1 AHA) opened the scoring at 15:19 of the first period when Jack Seymour scored from Connor Welsh. Just 60 seconds later, Jack Stockfish scored his seventh of the season from William Elias and David Hymovitch for a 2-0 lead.
Air Force (5-6-1, 2-4-0 AHA) got on the board on the power play early in the second period. Sam Stitz drew a penalty late in the first period that carried over to the second. Junior Brendan Gibbons took a puck from the goal line and scored on a sharp angle at 1:26. The power play goal was the first for Gibbons this season. Senior Mason McCormick had an assist for a point in three straight games. Junior Anthony Yu collected his first point of the season with the second assist. Air Force outshot Holy Cross, 11-3, in the second period as the Crusaders didn't get their first shot on goal of the period until 7:17 left in the second.
Early in the third period, the Falcons had a 4-on-3 advantage and had two shots on goal with two others blocked by Crusaders. Air Force then had two short-handed scoring chances, but could not get anything else past Crusader freshman Danick Leroux. Holy Cross scored a pair of empty-net goals in the final two minutes and Noah Eyre (18:35) and Mack Oliphant (19:40) sealed the sweep for the Crusaders.
Holy Cross and Air Force each had 24 shots in the game. Air Force was 1-for-5 on the power play and killed both of the Crusader man-advantages. Dominik Wasik made 20 saves for the Falcons. Danick Leroux had 23 for the Crusaders.
"They are a good team, well coached and have a championship culture," head coach Frank Serratore said. "They came at us hard early and they are not easy to play against. We were good this weekend. I don't know how much harder we can possibly play. The only way we can play better is to score a few goals. They were just a goal better than us all weekend. I like our team and I feel bad for them because their effort should have been enough to get us a split."
Air Force travels to Army for a two-game league series in West Point, N.Y., Friday-Saturday, Nov. 21-22. The Army series begins a four-game road trip for the Falcons.
