U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Air Force Women's Basketball set the tone early on Tuesday evening against Portland State, pushing a big lead in the opening minutes which held throughout, as the Falcons downed the Vikings 65-55 in Clune Arena. The win lifts Air Force to 2-0 in Clune Arena this season after downing Manhattan College in the Falcons' home debut on Saturday night.
Scoring 20 points (9-21 FG, 1-2 3FG, 4 REB, 4 AST) on the evening, senior Milahnie Perry surpassed Amanda Williams (1984-88) in career scoring, rising to eighth in Air Force history. Freshman Bhret Clay finished the evening with 11 points on 4-8 shooting from the field and a 3-5 finish from beyond the arc. The Falcon newcomer tied Jayda McNabb with a team-high six rebounds while adding a game high three steals, marking her third game with three or more takeaways to date. Junior Jordyn Devaughn finished with 10 points, earning her fourth double-digit finish in the Falcons' first five games.
Air Force led 20-12 at the close of the first quarter. Back-to-back early baskets for Clay got the Falcons started on an 11-2 run. Her five points to start and the Vikings' six first quarter turnovers allowed a healthy Air Force lead after the first 10 minutes.
Portland State was able to stay within single digits for most of the second quarter and even cut their deficit down to four three minutes in. Air Force, behind a nine-point flurry from Perry, closed out the half on a 12-2 run capped by a McNabb three-pointer as time expired. The Falcons went to the locker room sporting a 41-26 lead.
Returning from halftime, Portland State managed to cut the Falcons' lead back down, outscoring Air Force 14-9 in the third quarter. The Vikings closed the frame with an 8-2 run, whittling the Falcons' advantage to 10 at 50-40. A seven-point showing from Devaughn in the final quarter and Clay's third trey of the game served to keep the Vikings at bay until the final buzzer.
