BUFFALO, N.Y. – Chris Hedden tied the game with 1:37 left in the third period as Air Force and Canisius skated to a 3-3 overtime tie at the Harborcenter in Buffalo, N.Y. Neither team scored in overtime, but the Griffs won the shootout, 2-1.
Air Force (8-6-2, 5-4-1 AHA) opened the scoring on the power play. Freshman Oliver Genest drew a penalty and Will Dawson gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead at 5:58. Sam Stitz sent the puck behind the net and Dawson scored his fifth of the season on a wrap around. Canisius (7-7-2, 3-5-2 AHA) scored two goals in just over three minutes for a 2-1 lead. Rhys Criddenton scored on the rush at 13:29 and then Killian Kiecker-Olson scored on a short-handed breakaway at 16:43.
After Will Staring drew a penalty and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the Griffs gave the Falcons a full-service 5-on-3. The Falcons capitalized quickly as Chris Hedden and Nolan Cunningham played catch out front. Hedden then snapped a wrister from the high slot for his sixth goal of the season at 4:46. Late in the period, the Falcons killed a pair of Griff power plays as the game was tied after two periods.
The Griffs took a 3-2 lead when Kiecker-Olson scored his second of the game with 3:39 left. With 1:43 remaining, Air Force pulled the goalie for the extra attacker. Stitz and Brendan Gibbons set up Hedden in the high slot. Hedden's second of the game, and team-leading seventh of the season, tied the contest at 3-3 with 1:35 remaining.
In the 3-on-3 overtime, a penalty was called on Air Force, but Falcons killed it as the game ended in a tie. Caniisus outshot Air Force, 5-1, in overtime.
In the shootout, Kiecker-Olson and Nick Sajevic each scored in the first round. Both goalies made saves in the second round. In the third round, Griff Grant Porter scored and then Chase Clark made a save on Will Staring as Canisius earned the extra point in the standings.
Canisius outshot Air Force, 32-23, in the game. Air Force was 2-for-5 on the power play and killed all five of the Griff power plays. Dominik Wasik made 29 saves while Clark made 20.
"We just completed a four-game road trip and we went 3-0-1, taking nine of 12 points on the trip," head coach Frank Serratore said. "We played way better tonight than we did on Friday. This group has a lot of substance. We kept battling the whole game. We gave up that goal to them late, but we then we came back and got that extra attacker goal. Then in overtime, we get called for a penalty, but we did a great job killing it. Give our guys a lot of credit and I'm proud of this group for a fantastic road trip."
Air Force closes out the first half of the season with a pair of conference games against Robert Morris, Dec. 5-6, at Cadet Ice Arena.
