U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Dominik Wasik made 21 saves and four different Falcons scored as Air Force defeated Robert Morris, 4-1, in an Atlantic Hockey America game Friday, Dec. 5, at the Cadet Ice Arena. Air Force is now 8-2-1 in the last 11 games.
Air Force (9-6-2, 6-4-1) scored two goals in the final 24 seconds of the first period. Senior team captain Holt Oliphant scored with a diving backhander from the slot at 19:36. Ren Morque and fellow captain Mason McCormick had the assists. Air Force's other senior captain, Chris Hedden, gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead with 0.1 seconds left in the first. Hedden split two Colonials and Nick Sajevic set him up for his team-leading eighth goal of the season. Nolan Cunningham also had an assist on the play.
After a scoreless second period, the Falcons scored two in the third. Owen Dubois won a puck battle on the wall and Brendan Gibbons scored with a wrister from the bottom of the left circle at 4:44. Later in the period, Sajevic won a faceoff and Jake Peterson scored with a wrister from the right point at 11:26. With two assists tonight, Sajevic continues to lead the league with 18 assists and 20 points in 17 games. With 32 seconds left, Colonial Michael Felsing scored to make up the final margin.
Air Force outshot Robert Morris, 30-22, in the game. The Falcons were 0-for-1 on the power play and killed all three of RMU's man-advantages. Air Force has killed 12 straight opponent power plays over the last four games. Charlie Schenkel stopped 26 for the visitors from Pittsburgh.
"We were the better team and we deserved to win," head coach Frank Serratore said. "But we got away from our game at times. We can be better tomorrow and play more of a complete game. I don't want to be too critical because we found a way to win. We played with the lead the whole game and played really good hockey more times than not."
Air Force and Robert Morris (3-10-2, 3-3-1 AHA) conclude the two-game league series on Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Cadet Ice Arena.
