DENVER – Shy of its leading scorer on Monday night, Air Force Women's Basketball showcased its newfound depth in the Falcons' season opener, earning a 59-50 road win over in-state neighbor Denver in DU's Hamilton Gymnasium.
Junior Jordyn Devaughn and freshman Maddy Jensen paced Air Force scoring, both logging 13 points on the evening. Jensen, in her collegiate debut, shot an unblemished 5-5 from the field and 2-2 from three-point range. Junior Jayda McNabb finished the night with seven points, nine rebounds and five assists.
Air Force trailed 16-10 to close the first quarter. DU's Coryn Watts' 11 points paced first quarter scoring and kept the Pioneers out in front throughout the opening frame. A driving layup and left-wing three-pointer for Devaughn kept the Falcons within range in the early minutes of the game.
Jensen's first pair of career buckets got things moving for Air Force in the opening minutes of the second quarter. The first 12 points of an 18-2 run and 10 scored by Falcon freshmen (Jensen, Clay) bought Air Force its first lead of the game and forces DU timeout. A Watts steal off of Jensen in the waning seconds and resulting fast break layup left Air Force with just a 28-27 lead at halftime.
Early in the third quarter Air Force pushed a five-point lead, but DU rallied back and regained the advantage with a 9-2 run of their own. Spurring the Falcons into a response once again, Jensen added five more points to fuel another 8-0 Air Force streak, pushing Air Force to a 46-40 lead entering the final quarter.
With Air Force up six with 10 minutes to play, DU again worked its way back into a single possession game, but the Falcons refused to cede their advantage. Air Force closed the game on an 8-2 scoring run, with Devaughn scoring six in the final six minutes of the game. Devaughn's late spurt gave Air Force the separation they needed to close out the Pioneers and earn the program's fifth-straight win against DU.
Air Force led Denver in field goals (24), three-pointers (six), assists (11), offensive rebounds (12), steals (10), bench points (19), second-chance points (15) and turnover margin (+9).
