Distance Runners Shine at Husky Classic

SEATTLE, Wash. -- The Air Force distance squad had a stellar opening night of the Husky Classic on Friday, Feb. 14, as they combined for 12 improvements to the Academy Record Book in the two longest races of the indoor season – a total highlighted by seven Air Force Top 10 performances.
Backed by No. 6 all-time marks from juniors Zach Ayers (3000-meter run) and Jayden Nats (5000-meter run), the men rewrote large sections to the Air Force Record Book at Dempsey Indoor on Friday.
Lowering his 3000-meter time to 7:54.94, Ayers moved up two spots on the program's all-time standings and finished within the top 30 of a race that included nearly 100 runners. Senior Jason Renze entered the program's Top 10 following a 7:59.66 performance (No. 9 all-time, while first-year Falcon Saketh Rudraraju set a new Freshman Class Record and debuted at No. 14 all-time after crossing the finish line in 8:02.26.
Nats was part of a quartet of distance runners to debut on the program's all-time standings at 5000 meters during the Distance Carnival. In his first race of the year, the junior clocked in at 13:46.11 to post the sixth-fastest time in Academy history, while finishing eighth in the Invitational section. Classmate Max Sannes, competing in the open race, clocked a time of 13:54.07 to debut at No. 10 in the record book and finish second out of 35 runners. Sophomore Josh Razo and junior Tanner Lindahl also entered the program's all-time standings on Friday night, as the pair finished 14th (14:10.60, No. 23 all-time) and 16th (14:11.22, No. 25 all-time), respectively.
On the women's side, Air Force saw three of the eight fastest Falcons in program history compete in the 5000-meter run on Friday night. Senior Ally Peterson became just the sixth Falcon to run sub-16 indoors, as she crossed the finish line in 15:55.50 to finish third out of 36 runners and adjust her own No. 6 all-time mark. Sophomore Ella Johnson and junior India Jones finished the night right behind Peterson in the Academy Record Book, as the pair respectively posted the seventh- (16:28.67) and eighth-fastest (16:32.51) time in program history.
Sophomore Anna Harden debuted in the Top 10 of the program's 3000-meter standings after clocking a personal-best time of 9:31.22 to place within the top-third of the 88-runner event.
The Falcons close out the Husky Classic tomorrow (Feb. 15), while the rest of the team will be competing at the Jarvis Scott Invitational in Lubbock, Texas, and the Mountain Lion Open in Colorado Springs.
