Erich Upton, Patrick Hoopes Wrap Opening Night of Winter Cup

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Headlined by the second-highest vault score of the competition, Air Force seniors Erich Upton and Patrick Hoopes kicked off Winter Cup action this evening (Feb. 21) at the Kentucky International Convention Center in Louisville.

Upton, who finished the night ranked ninth in the all-around standings with a score of 76.650, shined on the vault – tallying a 14.250 to finish second in the 30-man competition. He also placed within the top half of the field on the floor exercise (13.100, 14th), while picking up 17th-place score on the back-to-back events (parallel bars – 12.700, high bar – 12.300). Upton rounded out Friday's all-around score with a 12.100 on the still rings (20th) and a 12.200 on the pommel horse (21st).

Hoopes scored a 13.800 on the pommel horse and is currently in fourth after the opening round.

The pair will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 23, when they return to the convention center floor for the final day of Winter Cup competition – which is slated to get underway at 2:00 p.m. (ET).
