COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Senior Madison Smith of the Air Force Women's Basketball team was named Mountain West Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
Smith averaged 25 points on a 2-0 week for the Falcons, leading all scoring in a pair of road wins at Utah State and Fresno State.
At Utah State (Feb. 19), Smith scored 29 points on 10-18 (.556), falling two short of a career best, while rounding out the stat sheet with a double-double, adding a season-high 10 boards. 12 first-quarter points against the Aggies laid the foundation for Air Force erasing a double-digit deficit to claim a lead that would not be given back the remainder of the game; Smith closed the first half of the game with 18 points to give Air Force a one-possession lead heading into halftime.
In a 67-66 win at Fresno State, Smith led all scoring on the floor with 21 points on 8-15 (.533) from the field and 3-6 shooting from three-point range, while adding five assists and four steals in a one-point road win to sweep the Bulldogs. Smith's entire scoring output came in the second half of a game in which the opposition was within a single possession for much of the final 10 minutes.
In both games, Smith averaged 18-33 (.545) from the field and 7-15 (.467) from three-point range, while averaging .405 and .323 respectively for the season prior to this week's games.
