Kayla Beach Breaks Falcons’ 42-Year-Old Heptathlon Record
3/28/2025 10:33:00 PM | Track and Field
SAN MARCOS, Texas – Sophomore Kayla Beach broke a 42-year-old Air Force Record in the heptathlon today (March 28), as the Air Force track and field team continued competition at the Bobcat Invitational in San Marcos. Beach, who added the program's No. 3 long jump distance during her record-setting day at Texas State, was one of four Falcons to account for Air Force Top 10 marks on Friday.
Beach, who entered Friday listed fifth in the overall standings, immediately vaulted up to second in the overall standings after opening the day with the third-best long jump distance in Academy history. Recording a winning mark of 18'11¼" (5.77m) – a personal improvement of more than 10 inches, Beach earned 780 points toward her overall score in the heptathlon. After adding career-best marks in the javelin throw (31.32m, 102'9" – 502 points) and 800-meter run (2:30.11 – 691 points) to remain in second, Beach finished the seven-event competition with 4761 points – an Air Force Record tally that added 33 points to a program standard Diane Elwer had held since 1983 – and more than 300 points to Lesly Torres' 2011 Sophomore Class Record.
Beach wasn't the only Falcon to impact the Top 10 of the program's heptathlon standings at the Bobcat Invitational, as freshman Sarah Reynolds debuted at No. 8 all-time following a 4435-point performance in her first collegiate heptathlon. Reynolds, who entered the day with 2761 points, opened the day with a 614-point distance of 5.20 meters (17'0¾" – No. 24 all-time at Air Force), before adding 384 points in the javelin (25.09m, 82'3") and 676 points in the 800-meter run (2:31.39).
With the completion of the heptathlon, Beach's 18'11¼" in the long jump and the 200-meter time of 25.85 that Reynolds recorded yesterday are new Heptathlon Sub-Event Records for Air Force. Beach added six inches to a standard Katie Thompson set in 2021 and Reynolds deleted 0.02 second from Deirra Poland's previous 2006 mark.
Beach and Reynolds weren't the only sophomore/freshman duo to impact an Air Force Top 10 in the same event on Friday, as freshman Morgan Glaser and sophomore Clara Teigland made improvements to the program standings in the 400-meter hurdles. Crossing the finish line in a time of 1:01.20, Glaser raced up to No. 3 on the Academy's all-time standings and took 0.65 seconds off the program's nine-year-old Freshman Class Record, while Teigland posted a personal-best time of 1:02.48 to move up to No. 10. With those times, the pair finished 14th and 17th, respectively, in a field of more than 45.
Sophomore Alex Brooks, who saw yesterday's pole vault washed out by weather and then had to wait until late Friday night for the competition to begin, finished 10th in the 21-vaulter field with a 3.60-meter clearance (11'9¾"). Elsewhere at the Texas State Track and Field Complex,, sophomore Ryan Hajek finished 15th out of 45 athletes in the 400-meter hurdles (career-best 54.05), and senior Taylor Rioux placed 19th out of 48 sprinters in the 200-meter dash (season-best 24.41).
The Falcons return to San Marcos tomorrow (March 29) for the final day of the Bobcat Invitational, while a handful of Air Force athletes will head to Austin to wrap up action at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
