Head Coach Taylor Hollander recaps a dominant start to postseason play for Air Force
LAS VEGAS – Air Force Women's Tennis continues to make its presence known in postseason play, as the Falcons topped the second-seeded, No. 69 Nevada Wolf Pack on Thursday in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Credit Union 1 Mountain West Championship.
The win marks the Falcon's highest-seeded postseason win since downing Fresno State in the 2016-17 MW quarterfinals.
Air Force scored its eighth consecutive doubles point and ninth in its last 10 matches to gain an early 1-0 advantage in the match. The Falcons picked up wins on lines one and two, snapping two-match win streaks for both Nevada pairs. All-Mountain West doubles pair Arianna Van Houweling/Nadia Kojonroj got out to a 3-0 advantage in their set against Silvia Maria-Costache/Marlene Foerster, before taking the final three games to close out in a 6-1 win. Court two's Alexis Odom/Maya Michalski played out to a 4-3 lead and then closed out Amahee Charrier/Kennedy Robinson, 6-3, improving to 13-5 on their seventh-straight doubles victory as a duo.
Nevada managed to even the score on line one, as Odom fell to Mountain West Player of the Year Charrier in two sets, but the Falcons were able to get back in front of the tally as Kojonroj dispatched of 10-4 Lou-Anne Guerbert, 6-1, 6-2 – An opponent that defeated her in similar fashion in the Falcons' Apr. 6 match in Reno. Kojonroj's second straight-set win in the tournament this season improves her to 12-7 in dual singles this spring.
Mavor and Van Houweling, both squaring off in rematches of the Falcons' previous tilt with Nevada, were able to secure victory where they had previously fallen short. Mavor, who led in her first match this year against Maria-Costache but ended up with an unfinished result due to clinch, secured a 3-1 Falcon lead off of a 6-3, 6-3 win to snap her opponent's three-match winning streak.
Van Houweling secured the Air Force clinch on line two, earning a two-set win over All-Mountain West honoree Foerster. Van Houweling, now at 13-6 this spring and riding a three-match win streak into the semifinals, built out a 4-1 lead and held on for a 6-4 opening set win, then bookended the match by taking an early lead to keep Foerster at arms-length on the way to a clinch.
