Women’s Basketball Falls to New Mexico

U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo. – A shorthanded Air Force women's basketball team was relentless in its pursuit of a win on Saturday afternoon and trailed by a single point at halftime against New Mexico but saw its chances at victory slip away in the second half, falling to the Lobos, 74-57.
Junior Keelie O'Hollaren led Falcon scoring with 14 points (5-11 FG, 2-5 3FG, 2-2 FT, 5 REB); Senior Emily Adams followed up scoring a career-high 13 points (6-13 FG, 3 REB, 3 AST, 2 STL). Juniors Jayda McNabb and Alexis Cortez each contributed seven points, with McNabb adding nine rebounds (game high) and four assists.
Air Force and New Mexico exchanged the lead three times in the opening quarter, ending in a 19-14 Lobo advantage. The Falcons held an early advantage on the scoreboard behind five first-quarter points for Adams but saw their lead slip away during a five-minute stretch that saw only a single field goal from Air Force to close the opening period.
The Falcons, trailing 21-16 at the 8:32 mark in the second quarter, rallied to tie behind a Cortez three and Adams' third get at the Lobo basket. Air Force and UNM battled through three more lead changes down the stretch in the second quarter, culminating as freshman AJ Mannering sunk her first career three-pointer in the final minute, pulling the Falcons back within a point at 32-31. In the second quarter, the Falcons put up a 42.9 percent showing both from the field (6-14) and from three-point range (3-7).
Returning from the locker room, Air Force fought furiously for its first lead since the opening minutes of the game but saw its deficit grow to double digits. O'Hollaren spurred Air Force on in the third quarter, scoring 10 points on 3-5 from the field and a pair of three-pointers. A team-leading 13-point rebuttal from UNM's Joana Magalhaes kept UNM in front and bought the Lobos a 55-45 advantage going into the final quarter. New Mexico outscored the Falcons 19-12 in the final 10 minutes, ending in a 74-57 UNM win.
Air Force (8-12 (2-8 MW) led UNM in rebounding (35), free throw percentage (.778), second-chance points (11) and fast-break points (five).
