U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Bentley scored two goals in the first period and beat Air Force, 5-1, in an Atlantic Hockey America game Friday, Jan. 9, at the Academy's Cadet Ice Arena.
Bentley (11-6-2, 10-1-2 AHA) scored two goals in a span of 3:30 of the first period for a 2-0 lead. Garrett Horsager scored with a wrap-around at 6:32 as the puck went off the pad of Air Force goalie Dominik Wasik. Bentley took a 2-0 lead on the rush. Bentley's Jake Black collected a puck at the goal line and sent it through the slot to Michael Mesic on the back-door. Mesic gave Bentley, the first-place team in Atlantic Hockey, a 2-0 lead at 9:50.
Air Force (10-9-2, 6-6-1 AHA) outshot Bentley, 18-10, in the second period, but Bentley took a 3-0 lead. Peter Kramer won a puck on the wall and sent it in front to a wide-open Chase Davis. Davis scored his fourth of the season at 7:14 for a 3-0 Bentley lead.
Air Force got on the board early in the third period as Jake Peterson scored his fourth of the season. Will Staring and Sam Stitz assisted on the goal that cut the Bentley lead to 3-1 at 3:35 of the third. Bentley answered with two power-play goals later in the third period. Stephen Castagna scored at 4:41 and Jake Black scored at 7:49.
Air Force outshot Bentley, 39-27, in the game. Bentley was 2-for-3 on the power play and killed all four of Air Force's advantages. Dominik Wasik made 22 saves for Air Force. Bentley freshman Lukas Swedin had 38.
"Bentley got to their game in a quick hurry and we didn't," head coach Frank Serratore said. "They are a hard team to out-work and they are committed to their game. They were a well-oiled machine and they blocked a ton of shots in the game. They are good and there is a reason they are in first place. We need to get back to basics and we have to make some adjustments on our penalty kill. We need to be harder to play against tomorrow, get to our game sooner, and we will."
Air Force and Bentley conclude the two-game league series on Saturday, Jan. 10, at 5:05 pm MT at Cadet Ice Arena.
