Air Force Downed By UNLV

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force men's basketball (3-23, 0-15 MW) fell to UNLV (13-13, 8-7 MW), 91-66, in Mountain West action Saturday afternoon at Clune Arena. Lucas Hobin led the Falcons with 19 points and Kam Sanders just missed out on a triple-double with 16 points, nine assists and eight rebounds.
A big second half allowed the Rebels to pull away after a close first-half that saw the Falcons trail by just three. UNLV erupted for 57 second-half points, while shooting 79 percent from the field and 88 percent from three in the second half. Kimani Hamilton scored 27 points and Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn added 21 points. Howie Fleming Jr. notched a triple-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.
Air Force played UNLV close in the first-half, trailing by just three at 34-31. The Falcons held the Rebels to 42 percent shooting from the field and 20 percent from three.
The Falcons, which have been plagued by turnover issues all season, allowed the Rebels to score just two points off turnovers in the opening half. The Falcons also controlled the boards in the opening half, holding a 24-18 rebounding advantage. Air Force had just 23 rebounds total in its previous game at New Mexico. The Falcons out-rebounded UNLV 35-29 for the game.
UNLV scored 28 points in the paint in the second half, while connecting on 7-of-8 three's to pull away.
Hobin knocked down four three's on the day, giving him 63 on the season. He became the first Falcon freshmen to surpass the 60 three's mark.
Sanders tied a career-high for points and set a new career-high for rebounds. He now has 102 assists on the season, becoming just the second freshman in program history to reach the 100 career assists mark.
Center Wesley Celichowski scored eight points on four field goals. Forward Kolby Gilles led the reserves with seven points.
Air Force scored 27 more points in this second meeting vs. the Rebels, as the team was held to 39 points in the first meeting. Air Force shot 40 percent from the field and knocked down eight three's on the day. The Falcons shot 80 percent from the line.
Air Force returns to action Tuesday, Feb. 24 hosting San Jose State. Tip time is 7 pm MT from Clune Arena. The game will be televised by Altitude and streamed on the MW Network.
