Air Force Edged By San Jose State, 86-80

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force men's basketball (3-25, 0-17 MW) fell to San Jose State (8-20, 3-14 MW), 86-80, in Mountain West action Tuesday night at Clune Arena. Freshmen Lucas Hobin and Kam Sanders combined for 41 points to lead the Falcons.
It was a tough loss for the Falcons, who were in it till the end. Trailing by 11 with under five minutes to play, the Falcons went on a 9-2 run to cut the game to four with 55 seconds left in the game. A steal on the ensuing possession had the Falcons with a chance to get closer, but a costly turnover allowed the Spartans to get the ball back. SJSU was able to convert a pair of free throws to seal the game.
Free throws and three-point shooting were the deciding factor in the game. San Jose State shot 89 percent from the line, making 17-of-19. The Spartans made 13 three's on the night. Air Force shot 64 percent from the line, making 14-of-22. The Falcons made eight three's on the night, but just two in the second half.
Air Force got up by as many as nine early in the game, before San Jose State got hot from three to go into the half leading 42-37. The Falcons opened with an 11-2 burst to start the game.
The Spartans got ahead by as many as nine in the first half, led by 18 points from Adrian Myers. Myers hit four three's in the opening half.
Hobin scored 15 points in the first-half for the Falcons, knocking down five of the team's six first-half threes.
In the second half, Air Force came back and took a one-point lead four minutes in. But San Jose State re-took the lead and would build up to as high as a 12-point lead in the second half. The Falcons rallied late, but ran out of time.
Air Force scored its most points in a conference game, shooting 51 percent from the field.
Hobin led the Falcons with 21 points, knocking down five threes. Sanders scored a career-high 20 points, adding five rebounds and five assists. Sanders broke the school freshmen record for most assists in a season, with 107.
Freshman Ethan Greenberg was the third Falcon in double figures with 10 points and two three's. Sophomore Eli Robinson added eight points and a game-high eight rebounds. Junior Wesley Celichowski added seven points and two blocked shots. Sophomore AJ Patterson had a career-high six assists.
Myers led San Jose State with a career-high 34 points. Myers was unconscious from three, going 8-for-9 from long range. Guard Colby Garland added 23 points for the Spartans.
Air Force returns to action Saturday, Feb. 28 at Wyoming. Tip time is 2 pm MT from the Arena Auditorium in Laramie, Wyo. The game will be streamed on the MW Network.
