USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force men's tennis scored one of its biggest wins of the season, defeating #57 BYU 6-1 Saturday morning at the USAFA Outdoor Tennis Courts. The Falcons (4-4) handed the Cougars (10-1) of the Big 12 Conference, its first loss of the season.
It was Air Force's first win over the Cougars since 2014 and the first win over a ranked opponent since defeating #65 New Mexico last season on April 5, 2025.
The Falcons opened by winning the doubles point and continued the momentum into singles, by winning five of six.
Jack Brown and Tyler Leaird opened doubles with a win at No. 1 over Chodur/Schreiner 6-2. BYU would win at No. 3 to tie doubles play up. AJ Moore and Langdon Tingleaf then won at No. 2 over Hasler/Owen 6-4 to clinch the doubles point.
In singles, the Falcons won the first four matches to coast to the win.
Brown got the first singles point with a win at No. 2 over Yubel Ubri. Brown won after Ubri had to retire from the match with Brown leading 5-2 in the first set.
Tingleaf put the Falcons up 3-0 with a win at No. 5 over Caden Hasler in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. Matthew Staton then clinched the match for Air Force with a win at No. 4 over David Duong in straight sets 6-4, 6-1.
The Falcons also tacked on wins at No. 1 and No. 6. Phillip Deaton won at No. 1 over Adam Chodur in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. Leaird won at No. 6 over Hardy Owen 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 1-0 (10-8).
Head coach Evan Urbina recapping the win:
"I'm so proud of how the team competed today. Obviously, this was a big match on our schedule that we wanted to be prepared for. AJ holding serve on a deuce point to clinch the doubles point was big, and we carried that momentum into singles. We were able to hold serve well after getting breaks, and we kept the pressure on the entire time. It was great to see Langdon and Matt close out the second sets and sustain great energy. This is a big win for the program against a ranked BYU team that is always well-coached and tough. Personally, I'm very grateful to the entire staff for getting us ready for outdoor tennis, and it was amazing to see so many of the Falcon faithful out there supporting. This means a lot. Go Falcons!"
Air Force returns to action tomorrow, March 1, hosting Denver. The match is set for an 11 am start.
