U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – A big win for the Air Force Women's Basketball team will leave a lasting mark on the Falcons' record book, as Air Force secured its third-straight win on Saturday afternoon, downing Grand Canyon, 65-64, in Clune Arena.
Air Force, who led for the majority of the contest, saw its advantage dwindle and vanish late in the fourth quarter. GCU held a one-point lead in the final minute. On the Falcons' final possession of the game, senior Milahnie Perry dropped in the go-ahead score with eight seconds remaining to ultimately lift the Falcons to victory.
Now sporting 1,623 points for her Air Force career, Perry surpassed Falcon alumna Riley Snyder (2018-22) to become the highest scoring player in Air Force's Division I history. Perry led all Falcon scorers for the afternoon, finishing the day with 26 points (9-23 FG, 8-10 FT, 5 AST). Junior Jayda McNabb added 14 points (4-7 FG, 5-6 FT, 6 AST); Junior Keelie O'Hollaren finished the day with 11 points; Senior Emily Adams closed with eight points and 10 rebounds.
Air Force led 21-15 at the close of the first quarter. An O'Hollaren three-pointer along the left wing cut off an 8-0 GCU run to start the game. Perry's first basket of the day pulled the Falcons back within a possession and sparked a 15-2 Air Force run to earn a lead which held for 34 total in-game minutes.
GCU pulled back within a basket eight times in the game, but Air Force mustered a response at each call to keep the Lopes at arms length. At the start of the second quarter, GCU got out to a 5-2 start to get back within a score. Air Force held out in front, making five-straight buckets to take a 35-28 lead with 4:09 left in the half. The Falcons took a 37-33 lead into the locker room.
After the half, Perry clinched the scoring record at the free throw line. The basket and a pair of makes in the third quarter led the way for Air Force scoring in the period. GCU again pulled back within a basket, but a turnaround layup for Adams kept the Falcons ahead and was the start of another 8-2 Air Force scoring streak which gave the Falcons an eight-point advantage. GCU's Ines Zounia dropped in a three-pointer with 33 seconds remaining in the quarter to cut Air Force's lead to five points (54-49).
Baskets for both Adams and O'Hollaren got Air Force out to a 58-49 lead with just over eight minutes left in the contest, but the Lopes rallied. GCU outscored Air Force 12-5 in a five-minute stretch to pull back within a point at 63-61 with 1:14 to go. A right-corner three from Grand Canyon's Juliana Lamendola fell with just over a minute remaining to put the Lopes back in front for the first time since the opening quarter.
After a miss on the Falcons' end, a potential game-sealing three for GCU's Anisa Jeffries missed and Air Force got the rebound and an A Falcon timeout was called with 15 seconds to go to advance possession on what proved to be the final Air Force possession of the game.
From the inbounds, Perry, battling into the GCU paint, dropped in a turnaround layup to buy back a Falcon lead with 8.2 seconds remaining and ultimately sink the Lopes. GCU, with the final possession of the game and a chance to win, was stifled on the final inbounds pass to secure the 65-64 Falcon victory.
Air Force (11-12, 5-8 MW) led Grand Canyon (9-15, 8-6 MW) in free throws made (16) and attempted (20), assists (14), steals (seven), points off of turnovers (16), points in the paint (28), and bench points (six).
