AZUSA, Calif. – The Falcons' distance squad shined under the lights of Cougar Stadium this evening (April 17), while a quartet of middle distance runners dominated the afternoon during a stellar day of racing at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa. Overall, the Falcons' contingent of 800- and 5000-meter athletes combined for eight Air Force Top 10 marks against some of the nation's elite.
Senior Zachary Ayers led the Falcons' primetime squad on Friday, as he recorded the second-fastest 5000-meter time in Air Force history – a 13:31.45 finish in the headlining, Invitational 1 section.
On the women's side, classmate India Jones became fourth 5000-meter runner in program history to run a sub-16 during the outdoor season, as she used a 15:50.82 finish to move up to third on the Academy's all-time standings and easily win her section of the Invitational races. Jones was one of two first-place finishes for the women at 5000 meters, as junior Anna Harden posted a 16-second PR (16:11.13) to win the 122-runner "A" section and account for the sixth-fastest time in program history. Fellow junior Ella Johnson rounded out the Falcons' trio of record book re-writers, as she closed the night with a 16:17.19 finish – No.9 all-time at Air Force – in the fourth section of Invitational races.
The Fetterolf sisters also impacted the program's 5000-meter standings today, as the pair debuted in the Air Force Record Book during their respective races. With a career-best time of 17:01.60, Ricky debuted at No. 22 on the all-time standings during a sixth-place finish in the 115-runner "B" section this morning. Scarlet joined her older sister in the record book nine hours later, when she raced a personal-best 16:38.97 during the "A" section to enter the all-time list at No. 13.
The afternoon belonged to the 800-meter crew, as all four Air Force runners posted career-best times that are some of the fastest in Air Force history.
Cam Bodine headlined the quartet of junior mid-distance runners on Friday, as she clocked the second-fastest time in program history with a 2:04.20 finish. Swinging out to lane three to overtake the field during her final kick, Bodine easily won her section and placed 17th in a field of more than 130 runners. Her time – the third sub-2:05 in outdoor history for the Falcons – also broke the program's Junior Class Record that was set during the indoor season.
Classmate Liliane Aittama added a time of 2:05.38 to take control of No. 4 on the Academy's all-time standings during a top-35 finish (31st), while fellow junior Rachel Fereday improved her own No. 8 placement in the Air Force Record Book by lowering her time to 2:09.25. On the men's side, junior Jonah Hochstetler clocked a career-best time of 1:49.38 to vault up to No. 8 on the program's all-time standings.
The Falcons will wrap up their weekend in SoCal later today (April 18), as the sprinters and field event athletes will conclude action at the Beach Invitational and the 1500-meter runners will return to Azusa for the final races of the Bryan Clay Invitational.
