GOLDEN, Colo. – Backed by a pair of runner-up finishes and an Air Force Top 25 distance, six members of the Falcons' javelin squad kicked off a four-meet week of competition for the track and field team at the Mines Midweek Meet in Golden, Colo., on Wednesday, April 8. As the only Academy representatives at Stermole Field, the group combined for four top-five finishes and three career-best marks.
With a distance of 45.30 meters (148'7"), freshman Cadee Alder finished second in the 18-thrower women's event – and led a trio of Academy freshmen to finishes within the top half of the field, Classmates Arianna Valenzuela and Victoria Richardson used career-best marks to finish fifth (39.37m/129'2") and sixth (37.82m/124'1"), respectively – with Valenzuela improving her own No. 24 ranking on the program's all-time standings.
On the men's side, sophomore newcomer Trenton Groff posted a one-meter PR of 59.29 meters [194-6] to finish second in the meet, while freshman Cameron Downing added a fourth-place distance of 55.46 meters [181-11].
Air Force's week of competition continues tomorrow (April 9), when a trio of heptathletes open competition at the Bryan Clay Multis in Azusa, Calif., while Texas Tanner begins a full weekend of action at the Oklahoma Throws Series.
