U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - Canisius goalie Charles Williams made 46 saves the Griffs came back from a 2-0 deficit to force a 2-2 overtime tie with Air Force in an Atlantic Hockey Conference game Saturday, Jan. 14, at the Academy's Cadet Ice Arena. Air Force is still in first place in the conference, 13-7-4 overall and 10-4-2 in the league.
The Falcons drew first blood when Erik Baskin made a pass from behind the net to Evan Feno who was slicing to the cage. Feno netted his third of the season as the Falcons took a 1-0 lead at 16:48.
Air Force went up 2-0 in the second period with a short-handed goal. The Falcons controlled the puck in their own end and Matt Koch skated the puck in the zone and his shot was saved. Jordan Himley and Kyle Haak crashed the net and Himley punched in the rebound for his second of the series and team-leading 12th of the season at the 6:18 mark. Canisius got on the board midway through the period. David Parrottino intercepted an attempted clear and fed Dylan McLaughlin on the back door. McLaughlin scored his second of the series and sixth of the season at 11:07.
Early in the third period, Canisius capitalized on the power play. Ian Edmondson made a cross-ice pass that bounced off an Air Force skate and right to Cameron Heath at the left point. His wrister, through traffic, tied the game at 2-2 at 2:38 of the third. Air Force outshot Canisius, 18-6, in the third period and 4-3 in overtime, but not able to break the tie.
The Falcons outshot Canisius, 48-27, in the game and 87-39 in the series. Air Force was 0-for2 on the power play while Canisius was 1-for-3. Shane Starrett made 25 saves for the Falcons.
"This was a game we should have won, but easily could have lost," head coach Frank Serratore said. "They are opportunists and we know that. They wait for you to make a mistake and then they pounce. We only scored three goals the entire series. When you do that, you don't have much of a chance to win. We didn't get much help from our power play either the whole weekend. This was disappointing, considering that we were up 2-0 in the game. We all know that in a two-goal game, the next goal is the big one. They got it and then they got the next one too."
Air Force travels to Pittsburgh, Pa., for a two-game series with Robert Morris, Friday-Saturday, Jan. 20-21, at 7:05 pm ET each night.
