No. 8 AIR FORCE at GRAND CANYON
Western Athletic Conference match
Sunday, Oct. 28, 1 p.m. PT
GCU Stadium, Phoenix, AZ
THIS WEEK: With a WAC Tournament berth clinched in last weekend's wins, No. 8 Air Force will continue to make a case for the top-seed and a first-round bye in the conference tournament. Due to a lengthy lightning delay and storm in Houston, Texas, that left Sorrels Field unplayable, the match between Grand Canyon and Houston Baptist on Oct. 19 was abandoned in the 64th minute and will not be made up. Because of the disparity in matches played, the WAC standings and seeding for the WAC Tournament will now be based on winning percentage instead of points. The Falcons currently lead the WAC with a 0.875 win-percentage.
The remainder of Air Force's schedule continues to intensify as UNLV, Grand Canyon and Utah Valley, along with Air Force, help make up the top-seven teams in the league. It should be noted that only the top-seven teams in the league get seeded in the WAC Championship tournament, hence the Falcons' remaining schedule presents a partial glimpse at the tournament field.
Air Force and UNLV will meet on Peter Johann Memorial Field, Friday at 7 p.m. PT. The Rebels are currently fourth in the league. The Falcons will take on Grand Canyon, Sunday, at 1 p.m. PT, in GCU Stadium. GCU hangs in the balance as they are currently No. 7 in the conference, making these final matches critically important for contention.
ON THE MAP: Air Force moved back into the top ten in two of the national polls this week. In the United Soccer Coaches Top 25, the Falcons are now ranked eighth. Air Force is also eighth in the College Soccer News Top 30 and 15th in the Top Drawer Soccer Top 25
The Falcons also moved to the top of the list in the Far West Regional rankings, trading places with Stanford over the weekend. UT Rio Grande Valley moved into the poll at fourth while Utah Valley stayed steady at eight.
The WAC has five teams in the top 100 of the latest NCAA RPI Rankings. Air Force jumped up 15 spots to 17th in the national rankings, putting the Falcons in position for a possible national seed in the NCAA tournament. UT Rio Grande Valley is 39th, followed by Seattle U in 68th. Utah Valley is 80th and San José State is 87th.
UP NEXT: Air Force concludes the regular season at home against WAC heavyweight, Utah Valley, Saturday, Nov. 3, at 1 p.m. MT. The finale will also serve as Air Force's Senior's Day. Nine seniors will be honored prior to the match at Cadet Soccer Stadium.
LAST WEEKEND: On Thursday, Air Force blanked San Jose State, 4-0, for the team's seventh shutout of the season, led by Austin Dewing's two goals.
On Saturday, a late goal by 2017 first-team All-American Tucker Bone lifted the 15th-ranked Falcons to a 2-1 lead over WAC heavyweight, Seattle U, at Cadet Soccer Stadium. Air Force extended to its ninth-straight win at home and fourth-straight win in WAC play as the team improved to 14-2 with a 7-1 mark in league action.
DEWING AND BONE WIN WEEKLY HONORS: Dewing, a senior forward from Colorado Springs, Colo. (Air Academy HS), was named the WAC's Offensive Player of the Week for games played between Oct. 15-21. Dewing scored three goals on the weekend to lead the league in points. On Thursday against San José State, he notched the first two goal en route to a 4-0 win and then on Saturday, he scored the opening goal in the 29th minute of a 2-1 win over Seattle U. He leads the Falcons with 11 goals and now has 28 goals in his career, which ranks him sixth in WAC history. Dewing's success over the weekend also landed his name on TopDrawerSoccer.com's team of the week.
Bone was honored as Air Force's Cadet Athlete of the Week for games played Oct. 15-21. Bone tallied three points over the weekend via an assist and a thrilling game-winning goal against WAC heavyweight, Seattle U, to lead the 15th-ranked Falcons to their ninth-straight home win. The game-winner was Bone's fifth of the season, a mark that puts him atop the conference and seventh in the nation in game-winning goals this season. The 2017 first-team All-American leads the Falcons with 26 points.
AIR FORCE AT A GLANCE: The Falcons are playing high-level soccer worthy of discussion among the nation's top teams. Air Force has scored more than four times as many goals as opponents faced (43-10). The Falcons' 43 goals is the second-most in the nation, just two goals behind national frontrunner, No. 1 Wake Forest. Air Force's exceptional offense spreads the ball so much that the Falcons' have recorded more than seven-times as many assists as opponents faced (37-5), while 13 Falcons have registered a goal this season-- six players have recorded two or more goals and four have recorded four or more. Air Force's 123 points is also the second-most in the nation. With an offense that scores 2.69 goals per game, the Falcons have the third-best scoring offense in the NCAA.
Air Force has taken nearly twice as many shots as all opponents per game (252-150), and more than double all opponents' shots on goal (120-50). The Falcons 7.50 shots on goal per game is the most in the WAC and sixth-most in the nation. Air Force has taken five or more shots on goal in 15 of 16 matches. The Falcons' stingy defense has yielded seven shutouts this season while holding nine of 16 opponents to single-digit shot counts, and all opponents to five or less shots on goal for the match.
Individually, Bone leads the squad with 26 points from 10 goals and six assists, a mark that ranks at 10th-most goals in the nation. Bone has also notched five game-winning goals this season, making him first in the conference and seventh in the nation in total game-winners. Dewing leads the team with 11 goals, a mark that puts him atop all WAC goal-scorers and 13th-most in the country. Senior teammate Luis Martinez is tied with Bone with six assist for the most on the team. Bone and Dewing are first and second, respectively, in the WAC in points per game- they are both in the nation's top 30.
In goal, Andrea Seazzu is proving to be one of the top keepers in the country with a 0.580 goals against average; a mark that puts him atop the conference and ninth-best in the NCAA. He has the second-best save-percentage in the WAC and 26th-best in the country (0.813). Seazzu's relatively low save-count (39) can likely be attributed to Air Force's suffocating style of defense that allows opponents just a few opportunities on frame per game, most recently holding San Jose State to zero shots on goal for the entire match.
While Seattle U leads the WAC in shots (290), it's Air Force holding the top spot in points (123), goals (43), least goals allowed (10), goals against average (0.61) and shutouts (7). The Falcons are tied with UT Rio Grande Valley for the lead in assists with 37. San José State has the lead in saves with 75.
In WAC play, Seattle U leads in shots (150) and Air Force leads in points (68), goals (23), least goals allowed (5), goals against average (0.61) and are tied with UT Rio Grande Valley in assists (22). UIW and CSU Bakersfield are tied for the lead in saves (41) while UNLV and Utah Valley are tied for the lead in shutouts (4).
Individually, UNLV's Gonzalez is the leader in shots (26) and AFA's Bone and Austin Dewing are tied with UTRGV's Kyle Edwards for the lead in points (14) and goals (6). UTRGV's Akio is the assists leader (6). UNLV's Nathan Bohn has the top goals against average (0.00) and save percentage (1.000) while CSUB's Rodrigo Sarmiento is the leader in saves (39). UVU's Joseph Wheelwright has the lead for shutouts in WAC play with four.
WIN, WIN, WIN: Since 2016, the only teams with 13+ wins every year are Wake Forest and Air Force. With the Falcons' 14th win secured, the only teams with 14+ wins each year are Wake Forest and Air Force, and the only other potential teams are Stanford (8 current wins) and North Carolina (11 currently).
The Falcons' 10-game win streak earlier this season overtook Lou Sagastume's 1986 team for the program record. The longest Air Force unbeaten streak is currently Doug Hill's 2017 squad who went 14 games without losing (11 wins, three ties). The Falcons returned seven starters and 17 letter winners from that record-breaking team.
The Falcons are on track to potentially shatter two more program records; most single-season wins (15) set by the 1980 and 1993 teams, and most single-season shutouts (10), which the 2017 and 1998 teams are currently tied for. The senior class of 2019 currently has 30 shutouts credited to their four-year term.
AMONG THE BEST: The class of 2019 is considerably one of the program's best teams to date, adding two All-Americans in the 2017 campaign, a program-best five to the All-West Regional team and another program-best eight to All-WAC teams. In terms of winning, they have posted 49 career wins to date with at least three games remaining in their career. The most-winning class to date is the class of 1989, who in the season of 1988, recorded their 50th win. Associate head coach Chris Foster was the captain of that team in his senior campaign.
Bone has played in all 49 of Air Force's wins over the last four seasons. Dewing did not play in one of those wins, totaling 48 career wins with the Falcons. Bone and Dewing are the Falcons' senior-most veterans with Bone making 62 career starts in 75 matches played while Dewing has played in 72 career matches with 43 starts. Albeit Bone has more wins on his career profile, Dewing has the better win-percentage. Bone's win-percentage is .653 while Dewing's is .667.
A pair of Falcons have cracked the WAC top-10 in several career categories. Air Force's Dewing is fifth all-time in points with 73 while teammate Bone is seventh with 66. Dewing's 28 career goals puts him sixth on the career list. SU's Sergio Rivas and Bone are tied for third on the all-time assists list with 22.
Bone and Dewing have also impacted the Air Force career record books this season. Dewing is now 12th in the all-time points category with 73 points, while Bone is tied for 16th with 66 career points. Bone's 22 career assists ties for seventh on the all-time assists list.
