Falcons Post 90-65 Win Over Johnson & Wales

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force men's basketball rolled to a 90-65 win over Johnson & Wales to open the 2018-19 season Tuesday night at Clune Arena. Sophomore Chris Joyce led four Falcons in double-digits with a career-high 15 points.
The Falcons shot 57.4 percent from the field and 56.3 percent from three point range. The Falcons had it going offensively, both inside and outside. Air Force dominated inside, out-rebounding JWU 45-24 and holding a 46-16 scoring advantage in the paint. The Falcons also connected on 9 of 16 three's.
Joyce, who entered the game with six points in his career, was a perfect 3 of 3 from three-point range, adding a field goal and four free throw buckets.
Joining Joyce in double-figures were Lavelle Scottie, Ryan Swan and Side Tomes. Scottie came off the bench to score 12 points and added seven rebounds. Swan scored 10 and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Tomes scored 11 points and tied a career-best with five assists.
Jontrell Herman scored 25 points and Andrew Romero added 20 to lead the Wildcats.
The Falcons raced out to a 50-32 lead at the half. In the first half, Air Force shot 62.1 percent from the field, and a scorching 77.8 percent from three-point range, connecting on 7 of 9 from downtown. The Falcons ended the first half on an 8-0 run, capped by back-to-back three's from Akaya and Scottie.
Ameka Akaya scored a career-high eight points and had two assists in his first-career start. The sophomore entered the game having scoring five career points.
Purvis Louder chipped in with nine points, five rebounds and three assists. LeSean Brown set a career-high with three assists and tied a career best with five points in reserve.
Five freshmen made their collegiate debuts for the Falcons. Zach Couper, Abe Kinrade, Isaac Monson, Nick René and AJ Walker saw their first action. Kinrade scored four and added four rebounds. Rene and Walker also scored buckets for the Falcons.
Air Force returns to action Friday, Nov. 9, at Texas State. Tip time is 7:02 pm CT in San Marcos, Texas.
