SAN MARCOS, Texas - Air Force men's basketball dropped a 67-57 contest to Texas State Friday night at Strahan Arena. Four different Falcons scored 11 points each in the setback.
A cold shooting spell by the Falcons late in the first half allowed Texas State to take control of the game. Trailing by as many as 15 points in the second half, Air Force mounted a late rally and managed to get to within five points of the Bobcats with a minute left in the game.
Texas State was able to hold off the late Falcon charge by making six straight free throws to seal the game.
Ameka Akaya, Lavelle Scottie, Ryan Swan and Sid Tomes scored 11 points each for the Falcons. Akaya set a career-high in points for the second straight game. Scottie scored all 11 of his points in the second half, connecting on a pair of three's. Swan came off the bench to make a team-best three three-point baskets.
Air Force and Texas State battled back and forth early in the first half before the Falcon offense hit a rough patch. Tied at 13-13 after 11 minutes of play, Texas State went on a 12-2 run over the next four minutes of play to jump ahead 25-15. Akaya supplied most of the offense late in the half to keep the Falcons in the game, scoring eight of the final 10 points for the team.
The Bobcats built up a 14 point lead at 56-42 with 8:38 to play when the Falcons began to claw their way back. An 8-2 Air Force run forced a Texas State timeout with 4:32 to go. After a Bobcat bucket, Tomes knocked down a three and followed up with a free throw bucket to pull the Falcons to within six at 60-54.
After another Texas State score, Swan sank a three-pointer to make it a five point game at 62-57 with 1:10 left in the game. The Falcons were unable to close the gap, as the Bobcats made their free throws to end the game.
Nijal Pearson scored 21 and Alex Peacock added 14 to lead Texas State in scoring.
Air Force is off from competition until next weekend, when they partake in the Bimini Jam from Nov. 16-19 in the Bahamas. The Falcons take on UMBC in their first game on Friday Nov. 16.
