Women’s Hoops Gets Tripped up at SDSU, 70-61

Air Force women’s basketball held the lead for the majority of the game but was unable to fend off an Aztec rally
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Air Force was unable to fend off a fourth-quarter rally by San Diego State (6-8, 1-2 MWC), falling to the Aztecs, 70-61, Saturday afternoon in Viejas Arena. The Falcons drop to 5-10 overall with a 1-3 mark in MWC action.
Sophomore co-captain Kaelin Immel led the Falcons with 15 points and six rebounds. Emily Conroe and Riley Snyder dropped 12 points apiece and combined for seven rebounds. The Falcons, who shot over 40 percent for three quarters, held the advantage in points for over 20 minutes. A sluggish fourth quarter proved to be the difference.
Fouls were also a prevalent factor in the game as Air Force was called for 28 fouls which the Aztecs converted into 26 points at the free throw line. Two Falcons fouled out and three others were in foul trouble at the conclusion of the game.
San Diego State out-rebounded the Falcons, 40-30, and shot 40.4 percent on the game. The Aztecs were led by Mallory Adams who hit critical three-pointers on three occasions.
The Falcons travel to Las Vegas to take on UNLV in the in the fifth MWC contest of the season. The Falcons and Rebels will be tipping off at high noon (PT), Wednesday, Jan. 16, in Cox Pavilion (2,500). UNLV will be riding high as they just ended the MWC front-running New Mexico Lobos win-streak with a 66-57 win in Las Vegas.
Quarter by Quarter Breakdown
First Quarter: Air Force 18, San Diego State 14
AF starters: Haley Jones, Emily Conroe, Riley Snyder, Alexis Springfield, Kaelin Immel
-Springfield broke the ice on scoring with a layup via a clean feed from Jones
-Air Force put on staunch defense to force two turnovers and capitalize with a 6-0 run
-Snyder put up the first three-ball attempt on the game from deep, slightly off the mark
-SDSU responds with a 4-0 run but was quickly ended by Huffman with an offensive board and reattack for a bucket
-Air Force led 10-6 at the first quarter media timeout
-Autrey was the first to go to the free throw line, hitting both to extend AF's lead, 16-8
-The Falcons and Aztecs exchanged a pair of buckets to close the quarter with AF leading, 18-14
-The Falcons shot 40.0 percent from the field while SDSU shot 45.5 percent, both teams were perfect from the free throw line
-Immel led the Falcons in scoring with six points while snagging three rebounds
Second Quarter: Air Force 31, San Diego State 30
-SDSU was the first to score in the second quarter, adding two buckets to tie the Falcons at 18
-Huffman assisted Snyder who hit the jumper to regain the lead, but SDSU responded with two straight to take their first lead of the game with 8:08 remaining in the second quarter
-SDSU had success drawing fouls on the attack, hitting 6 of 10 free throw attempts to take the lead via the free throw line
-AF went on a 2:48 scoring drought heading into the media timeout with 4:55 remaining in the half
-Conroe killed the scoring drought with a mid-range jumper, followed up by a three-ball from Snyder to bring AF within one, 27-26
-Moments later Snyder drained another three-ball to take the lead, 29-27
-Springfield followed up with a bucket in the paint to put AF on an 8-0 run with a 31-27 lead

-SDSU scored first in the second half as Adams went hard to the rack and drew and the and-one foul to take the lead
-Snyder regained the AF lead with a jumper via Springfield's assist
-SDSU continued to score from the free throw line, adding six free throws to one bucket from the field three minutes into the half
-Both teams played sluggishly over the course of three minutes until Conroe hit a three-pointer from the wing to regain the lead, 42-41, at the media timeout
-The Falcons pushed forward with an 8-0 run over 1:39 for a 46-41 lead while SDSU was on a three-minute stay in the scoring doldrums
-Foul trouble became an issue for the Falcons as Itugbu, Springfield and Autrey had four fouls apiece with three minutes remaining in the third quarter
-AF shot 44.0 percent on the quarter while SDSU went 17.6 percent from the field

-SDSU regained the lead via a 6-0 run, 55-53, which Jones ended with a bucket in the paint to knot the game at 55
-AF shooting fell off the mark as the Falcons shot 1-7 leading into the media timeout, allowing SDSU a chance to take the lead, 59-55
-Conroe drained a jumper to bring AF within two but SDSU responded with a three-ball to build a five-point lead with 4:38 remaining
-Immel knocked down her second three-ball out of the second media timeout to bring AF back within two, 62-60
-SDSU responded with another three to build a five-point cushion with 2:55 remaining in regulation
-A five minute AF scoring drought allowed SDSU the chance to build a nine-point lead to finalize the game, 70- 61
