U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Arizona State scored three third-period goals for a 5-2 win over the Falcons in a non-conference college hockey game Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Academy's Cadet Ice Arena.
ASU (3-3-0) opened the scoring on the power play. Brinson Pasichnuk's shot from the point deflected off the skate of Demetrios Koumontzis' skate and into the net. The goal was initially waved off, but was ruled a goal after video review. James Sanchez also assisted on the play.
The Sun Devils took a 2-0 lead early in the second period after the Falcons turned the puck over in its own end. ASU winger Johnny Walker fed Sanchez coming down the slot and Sanchez scored his second of the season at 5:30. Air Force got on the board late in the period and freshman Luke Manning scored his first career goal at 16:59 from Kieran Durgan and Alex Mehnert. Â Mehnert made a cross ice pass to Durgan in the right circle. Durgan's shot was saved but Manning put back the rebound to cut the ASU lead to 2-1 after two periods.
Another Falcon turnover led to a Sun Devil goal early in the third period. Jordan Sandhu and Austin Lemieux set up Logan Jenuwine at 4:37. Air Force answered with its first power-play goal of the season. Max Harper tipped in a shot by Brady Tomlak at 8:09 to cut the ASU lead to 3-2 at 8:09. Zach Mirageas also assisted on the play. Less than two minutes later, ASU scored after a too many men on the ice penalty on the Falcons. Sanchez found Joshua Maniscalco on the back door and the Sun Devils took a 4-2 lead. With 3:35 left, and on the power play, the Falcons pulled the goalie for the extra attacker and had several chances. However, a turnover at the blue line led to an empty-net goal by Willie Knierim to seal the 5-2 ASU win.
Air Force (0-4-0)Â outshot ASU, 40-29, in the game. The Falcons were 1-for-7 on the power play while the Sun Devils were 2-for-4. Zach LaRocque made 24 saves for the Falcons. Evan DeBrouwer made 38 for the visitors.
"We just cannot turn pucks over the way we did tonight," head coach Frank Serratore said. "We played better tonight, but not smarter. It wasn't so much that they beat us, but that we beat ourselves. The third period was very disappointing. I thought we had them on the ropes after the second period. I felt like we had the legs. We have to find a way to win these games. We've been here before, but it doesn't mean I have to accept it."
