Air Force women's tennis is sending two players to the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships, held Oct. 5-13, at the Michael D. Case Center on the University of Tulsa campus and Case Tennis Center at LaFortune Park in Tulsa, Okla. Senior TJ Fumagalli and junior Meredith Jones will represent Air Force.
Jones opens singles play Saturday and Sunday in pre-qualifying draws action, while Fumagalli is set to open play Monday-Tuesday in the qualifying singles draws. Both Fumagalli and Jones will also participate in the qualifying doubles play on Monday and Tuesday. The main draw runs Tues-Sat, Oct. 9-13.
"This is the first time in program history that our women's team has had two individuals compete in the singles portion of this tournament and the first time to have a singles player and a doubles team already in the Qualifying Draw," head coach Kim Gidley said. "For our program, we are continuing to try and reach new levels and accomplish new goals, so this a great start for this year. This is a very prestigious tournament in which we are competing against the top five percent of Div. I players across the country in singles and doubles. It will be exciting to see how these two represent USAFA this weekend."
The women's singles final will air live on ESPNU beginning at 6 p.m. followed by the men's championship at 8 p.m. on Championship Sunday. The live airing of the finals marks another milestone for the ITA and college tennis as the ITA All-American Championships will air live on broadcast television for the first time.
Nearly 500 men will compete in the singles competition, with almost 90 doubles teams set to take the court in doubles play. For the women, approximately 230 individuals are registered to compete in the singles tournament, while nearly 100 doubles teams enrolled in doubles competition.
