USAF Academy, Colo. - Air Force dropped a 68-66 heartbreaking loss to Army West Point, Wednesday evening in Clune Arena. The Falcons, now 1-2 overall, were outscored 46-27 in the second half, giving Army (1-2) the opportunity to reel Air Force in into the waning seconds of the game to get the win.
Sophomore forward Riley Snyder was the Falcons leading scorer for the second-straight game as she posted 13 points for her second double-figure scoring mark this season. Snyder also collected five rebounds and two steals on the night. Snyder's sophomore classmate, Haley Jones, was a force in the paint, grabbing eight rebounds and scoring 10 on the night. Jones was one point shy of a double-double against NJIT last Friday, and landed just two boards shy of the same feat tonight. Jones shot 5-6 from the field, setting the top shooting-percentage standard for all players on the court.
The Air Force freshman put their ability on display yet again as Kamri Heath, Grace Hess, Allyah Marlett and Nikki McDonald scored six apiece, bringing the combined freshman total to 24 points on the night. The aforementioned freshman quartet averages 22.3 points per game so far this season. Hess also dished out a game-high four assists.
Co-team captains Kaelin Immel and Emily Conroe were also significant contributors as the junior duo combined for 19 points and 17 rebounds. Conroe, who was a bucket away from a double-double mark in the last game, landed just one point shy of a double-double on the night, snagging a game-high and personal season-best 12 boards, just one shy of her career-high mark. Immel collected five rebounds and added three assists to her stat line. It was Immel's second time dropping double-figure scoring marks in the last two games.
The Falcons raced out to a strong start, outscoring Army, 14-6, in the first 10-minutes while causing three Black Knight turnovers and giving up none. Air Force excelled in the second quarter as Conroe drained three three-balls to help the Falcons to a 14 point lead at the 4:01 mark and what eventually became a 21-point lead in the final minute of the half. Air Force shot 43-percent (10-23) from the field and 50-percent (4-8) from deep in the second quarter where they held their largest lead, and 42-percent from the field and 44-percent from down range on the half.
A change in the wind turned the favor away from Air Force in the second half as the Falcons shot just 14-percent in the third quarter, hitting just 3-of-22 from the field while missing the one three-ball attempted. Army outscored the Falcons, 21-6, in the third quarter cutting the Air Force lead to just two points at the beginning of the fourth quarter.
The Falcons' shooting improved in the fourth quarter but not enough to hold off the Black Knights who go hot from the arc, knocking down three-of-four three-ball attempts shooting 10-of-15 from the field. Air Force battled to within two points with 1:11 remaining but were unable to score a tying bucket in the final 70-seconds.
Next up, Air Force wraps up a three-game home stretch against the University of San Diego, Saturday (Nov. 16) at 2 p.m. MST, in Clune Arena. The game will mark the fourth meeting between the programs with San Diego remaining unbeaten in the three-game series.
