Air Force set for WWPA Championships

Seventh-seeded Falcons face second-seeded UC San Diego, Nov. 22
This Week: Air Force (10-16 overall, 1-6 WWPA) travels to Riverside, Calif., for the annual Western Water Polo Association Championships, Nov. 22-24. The Falcons are the No. 7 seed and will face second-seeded UC San Diego, Friday, Nov. 22, at 1 pm PT.

About the Tournament: California Baptist is the host school for the first time at the Lance Aquatics Center. UC Davis, ranked 11th in the nation and 7-0 in league play, enters the tournament as the top seed for the fourth time in the last five seasons. The champion of the WWPA postseason tournament will secure an automatic berth into the first round of the NCAA Championships. UC San Diego, 6-1 WWPA, is the No. 2 seed with the only loss to top-seeded UC Davis on the final weekend. UC San Diego won the 2018 championship.

All-Conference Team: Junior Campbell Harris was named second team all WWPA while Grant Snyder was named the freshman of the year and selected to the all-freshman team. Harris ranked fourth in the league with 18 goals in conference games. In all games, he was second on the team and 10th in the league with 48 goals this season. Harris also led the team with 21 drawn exclusions. Snyder is the first Falcon to earn WWPA freshman of the year honors since Cruz Smithson in 2009. Snyder was third on the team in goals (39) and points (52). Snyder also had 13 steals and was a perfect 9-0 in sprints.
So close: Of Air Force's 16 losses this season, seven have been by two goals or less with five of them coming against teams ranked in the top 20. In conference play.
Recently: On the final weekend of the regular season, Air Force split a pair of road conference games. Air Force defeated Fresno Pacific, 15-9, before falling to Santa Clara, 15-11.
In the first game, Grant Snyder scored four goals in Air Force's first conference win of the season. Campbell Harris, Sam Fuller and Corey Tanis gave the Falcons a 3-1 lead. Air Force closed out the second quarter with four straight goals, one by Mike Miller and three by Snyder for a 10-4 lead at the half. FPU outscored Air Force, 4-1, in the third period as the Falcons led 11-8 entering the final quarter. The Falcons scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter as Gavin Jones, Snyder and Miller all found the back of the net. In addition to Snyder's four goals, which tie a career high, Miller, Harris and Sak each scored two. Ian Shepherd led the Falcons with two assists. Anthony Tolbert made eight saves.
In the final game, Air Force's late rally came up short as Santa Clara defeated the Falcons, 15-11, Nov. 10, in Santa Clara, Calif. Santa Clara led 7-3 at the half and 13-4 late in the third quarter. Grant Snyder scored late in the third quarter and Miller scored early in the fourth to cut the SC lead to 13-6. After a Bronco goal for a 14-6 lead, the Falcons rallied for the next five goals to cut the deficit to 14-11 with 2:42 remaining. During the run, Snyder scored two, Miller scored two and Gavin Jones added one. Miller led the Falcons with five goals while Snyder scored three and Harris had two. On the two-game road trip, Snyder and Miller each had seven goals.
The Helping Hand: Senior Reagan Pittman is fourth in the conference and seventh in the nation with 54 assists this season. Pittman also leads the team with 67 points. He has two or more assists in 14 games this season, including a career-best six against La Verne, Chapman and UC Davis. In the win over Brown, he had a career-high four goals. Pittman also leads the team with 12 field blocks and is second on the team with 26 steals this season.
The Water Cheetah: Senior Mike Miller's speed has gained Air Force the first possession more times than not. Miller leads the nation with 79 sprint victories this season. Miller is 79-9 in sprints this season, and his .888 winning percentage is the best in the conference (among players who have more than 30 sprints). Miller is also eighth in the league in goals scored with 51, including a career-high six in the win over Chapman.
Between the Pipes: Sophomore Anthony Tolbert ranks sixth in the league in saves (189) and sixth in steals (34). He made a season-high 12 saves against No. 8 Long Beach State, Sept. 22. He has had 11 twice four times season, including the last two games against Concordia and UC San Diego.
