Kaelin Immel led the Air Force women’s basketball team with 19 points
USAF Academy, Colo. - Air Force dropped a 72-56 contest to the Portland Pilots, Saturday afternoon in Clune Arena, USAFA. The Falcons, now on a four-game losing streak, drop to 1-5 on the season while the Pilots improved to 5-1.
Junior co-team captain Kaelin Immel paced the Falcons with 19 points, marking her second-straight game to lead Air Force in scoring. Immel was on target from the free throw line and from down range, sinking 8-10 attempts from the line and 3-5 from the arc, tying a personal season-best of three three-pointers on the game. Immel rounded out her stat line with two steals and two assists.
The Falcons drained 22-25 free throw attempts as a team, setting a new standard for most free throws made in a single game this season. Riley Snyder, Allyah Marlett and Nikki McDonald all shot perfect from the free throw line, while Immel and junior teammate Emily Conroe others shot over 80-percent at the line, bringing the team's free throw percentage to 88-percent on the game. Air Force also connected on six three-balls, setting a season-high mark for the squad beyond the arc.
Conroe was the second leading scorer with 11 points, six of which were tallied at the free throw line; however, Conroe was not her usual-self in the paint, collecting only one rebound for the Falcons on the day.
Sophomore guard Haley Jones led the team with eight rebounds on the day, splitting her total down the middle with four boards collected on each side of the ball. Jones also led the squad with two blocks. The Air Force freshmen combined for 20 points on the game led by McDonald's nine points.
Three Pilots put up double-figure scoring marks led by Alex Fowler's 20 points. Kate Anderson registered a double-double on the day, scoring 16 points while snagging 10 boards while adding a game-high five assists to her stat line. The scoring disparity occurred in the paint, where Portland scored 44 points to Air Force's 12.
The Falcons started strong in the first quarter, going back-and-forth with the Pilots until the final two-minutes where Air Force put up a three-point lead to close the quarter on top, 19-16. Portland battled back in the second, outscoring the Falcons, 21-16, to close the first half with a two-point lead, 37-35.
Both teams struggled in the third quarter, putting up their lowest shooting and scoring marks for the game. Portland bounced back in the fourth while Air Force struggled to control possessions and sink shots. The Pilots outscored the Falcons, 35-21, in the second half.
Next up, Air Force hits the road for a pair of games over the Thanksgiving holiday to take on Navy on Wednesday (Nov. 27), in Annapolis, Maryland, and Tennessee on Sunday (Dec. 1), in Knoxville, Tennessee. Air Force looks to make good on last season's home loss to Navy and will be meeting the Lady Volunteers in the teams' first-ever meeting.
