20th Season of Mountain West Baseball
- This weekend marks the opening of the 20th season for Air Force in the Mountain West Conference, since joining the league during the 1999-2000 season.
- The Falcons are 119-383 over the past 19 seasons,
- Air Force's team record for wins in a MW season is 14 back in 2002.
- The Falcons currently have five straight double digit win MW seasons, while the previous 14 had just one (2002)
Last Week in Review
- The Falcons had a 3-1 weekend in North Carolina, which included a series win over Navy at the Freedom Classic in Kinston, as well as a victory over No. 14 East Carolina on Monday.
Sinking the Pirates
- Air Force knocked off No. 14 ranked East Carolina, 3-2, Monday at ECU's Clark-LeClair Stadium. It was the fourth time since the start of last season Air Force has defeated a nationally ranked opponent. In addition, ECU was the highest ranked team AF has beat since defeating top-five TCU twice back in 2010.
Winning The Freedom Classic
- Air Force took two of three games from Navy at the 2019 Freedom Classic. After losing the opener, 2-1, Air Force bounced back with a doubleheader sweep, 6-4 and 7-2. It was the fifth Freedom Classic series win for Air Force, and they moved to 15-13 all-time against the Midshipmen in Kinston.
Nichols Racks up the Ks
- Senior LHP Ethan Nichols had a career-best outing against Navy in the second leg of the doubleheader, Feb. 24. The southpaw went 6.0 innings, tying his career mark, while striking out 10 Midshipmen, a new career-high. He only allowed four hits, while walking none. The 10 Ks were the most in a single outing for an Air Force pitcher since Matt Hargreaves had 10 in a complete game shutout of Tulane back in 2017.
Game Winning HRs Galore
The Falcons utilized the long ball to get wins over Navy, as well as ECU, as the Falcons had six over the three game winning streak, including two game winners. Against Navy, freshman Gabriel Garcia charged a two-run shot for his first career AF hit, in a 6-4 win. Then against No. 14 ECU, senior Gabe Martinez smacked a solo shot in the ninth inning in a 3-2 win. It was the first dinger of his AF career. The Falcons enter the weekend with seven homers as a team, which leads the MW Conference.
The Price is Right
Freshman RHP Nathan Price has burst onto the scene for the Air Force Falcons to start the season, as the youngster is a perfect 2-0 in his first two outings, with a 1.04 ERA in 8.2 innings. Price is holding opponents to a .176 batting average, and he has four strikeouts to just one walk. Against No. 14 ECU, Price went the final 5.0 innings in relief, only allowing two hits and one run, while striking out a pair.
Don't Run on Dau
Senior captain catcher Rob Dau has always had a knack for throwing out would-be base stealers, as he has been top-five in the conference in that category all three seasons, including leading the league as a sophomore in 2017. This season, he has only thrown out one so far, but he has three pickoffs to lead the league.
It Just Comes "Easley"
Junior outfielder Ashton Easley has had a hot start to his 2019 campaign. He has done it all, leading the team with a .567 slugging, smacking two triples and a home run, while collecting a total of 10 hits (tied for team lead) for a .333 batting average, which is second on AF. He has a hit in each of the first eight games of the season. He also has gone a perfect 3-for-3 in steals, and has no errors in 15 chances while patrolling right field.
Double Goose Eggs
With its two shuts on the opening weekend of the 2019 season, over ULM 1-0 and Southern 13-0, the Falcons are just one of 23 teams in D1 with multiple shutouts. Joining them from the MW Conference are Nevada, who has two as well.
Active Career Leader
- With such a successful career to this point, it shouldn't come as much surprise that senior Nic Ready is among the NCAA active career leaders in multiple categories. The Texas is the active career leader in doubles, while ranking second among active players in RBIs, and total bases, and fourth in home runs.
On the Horizon
- Air Force has the midweek off before heading to California for its first road conference series of the season at San Jose State. The weekend series against the Spartans begins Friday, March 8, with a 7 p.m. MT first pitch.
