2/6/2019 9:46:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Briana Autrey led the Air Force women’s basketball team with 21 points on the night
LARAMIE, Wyo. - Air Force competed hard but was unable to keep up with Wyoming, falling to the Cowgirls, 80-60, Wednesday evening in Arena Auditorium. The Falcons, who are now 8-14 with a 4-7 mark in league play, were paced by freshman guard Briana Autrey who dropped 19 points on the night.
Air Force got off to a hot start, shooting perfect (4-4) for the first 2:20 while going bucket-for-bucket with the Mountain West powerhouse. As Wyoming (13-5, 6-3 MWC) began to settle in to a speedy offense, Air Force was unable to keep pace with the Pokes. Wyoming maintained their lead for the remaining 37-minutes of play.
Autrey's 21-point performance was the most by any individual on the evening, marking her third twenty-plus scoring game of the season. She was just two points shy of her season high. The Suffolk, Virginia, native also added three assists, two rebounds and a block to her stat line.
Sophomores Kaelin Immel and Emily Conroe made significant contributions in the game, combining for 21 points. Immel dropped the second-most points with 12 for her 14th double-figure scoring performance of the season, ninth in league play. Conroe, who is the team's leading rebounder in MWC action, collected nine rebounds in addition to her nine points and a block. She barely missed the mark for her third double-double of the season.
Freshman forward Haley Jones remained consistent in the Falcons' starting lineup, registering eight points, two steals and an assist. Air Force's bench combined for eight points via Noelle Tomes' and Michaela McFalls' four points apiece.
Despite the loss, Air Force shot 42.6 percent from the field on the night, a mark noticeably greater than its season average. The Falcons also held the Cowgirls to only three three-balls on the game, tying a season low for the Pokes who average 8.5 three-pointers per game. The Falcons' 11 turnovers was the best mark they've had all season as they average 19 turnovers per game this year. Wyoming committed 15 turnovers on the game.
The major differences were bench points, rebounds and assists-- all of which the Cowgirls held the advantage in. Wyoming's bench combined for 25 points, while the team as a whole out-rebounded the Falcons by 10 boards (35-25) and made more than four times more assists than the Falcons (27-6), displaying their ability to move the ball around.
Wyoming's 6-foot-2 senior forward Bailee Cotton led the Cowgirls with 19 points and a game high 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double this season. Four other Pokes registered double-figure scoring marks with exceptional shooting performances from Marta Gomez (7-8) and Sladjana Rakovic (6-8). Wyoming shot 62.5 percent in 56 attempts on the evening. Karla Erjavec made 10 assists on top of her six-point contribution.
Following a Saturday (Jan. 9) bye, the Falcons return to action at home against UNLV, Weds., February 13. The Falcons and Lady Rebels will be tipping off for the second time this season at 7 p.m. MT. Air Force, who is 7-3 when playing at home, will be aiming to redeem the Jan. 16 loss in Las Vegas.
