Senior Drew Wiss tallied three hits on the day
LINCOLN, Neb. – The Air Force Academy baseball team couldn't keep pace with Nebraska in a 12-3 defeat to the Cornhuskers, Wednesday afternoon, March 20, at Haymarket Park.
The Falcons (9-7) once again kept up with the Husker (8-7) offense in terms of hits, tallying nine to Nebraska's 11. Senior Drew Wiss led the way with three hits, tying his career high, including a double. Co-captain Rob Dau added a pair of hits, including a double and RBI, while senior Nic Ready launched his second home run of the season, a solo shot. It was the 39th of his career, moving him into a tie for third on the all-time HR list at the Academy.
It was a tough day on the mound for the pitching staff, but it was highlighted by a scoreless inning from freshman Stevan Fairburn Jr., which included a strikeout. He has tossed two scoreless frames to begin his Air Force career.
It was all Nebraska early, as they struck for three runs in the first and four in the third to lead it 7-0 in the fourth inning. Air Force broke the shutout in the fourth on a bloop RBI single from Dau, his second hit of the day.
After a scoreless fifth inning, the Falcons got one back in the sixth on an RBI ground out from freshman Alexander Pup following a leadoff double from sophomore Jonathan Imperial, making it 7-2. It was the first hit of Imperial's career. The Huskers answered back immediately, however, getting three runs back to open up a 10-2 lead with three to play.
Ready led off the seventh with his second home run of the season, making it 10-3. Despite getting two more runners on, they were left stranded to keep the seven run deficit. The Huskers would go on to get two more in the bottom of the eighth, resulting in the 12-3 final.
Air Force will be back home this weekend for a three game non-conference series with Dallas Baptist. Game one of the set from Falcon Field is scheduled for a 3 p.m. first pitch, Friday, March 22.
