Air Force Women’s Hoops Falls to New Mexico, 75-53

Kaelin Immel led Air Force women’s basketball with 17 points and six rebounds on the day
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force dropped a 75-53 Mountain West contest to the University of New Mexico, Saturday afternoon in Clune Arena. The Falcons drop to 4-12 overall with a 2-3 mark in league play while New Mexico claimed its first MWC victory of the season, improving to 10-8 with a 1-4 record in the conference.
Junior co-team captain Kaelin Immel paced Air Force with 17 points six rebounds, tallying her 13th double-figure scoring mark of the season. Freshman teammate Nikki McDonald was the second-leading scorer for the Falcons, tying her career-best nine points while also six rebounds to her stat line. McDonald ignited the Air Force offense with a pair of three-pointers on the day, shooting a team-high 60-percent from the field on the day.
Emily Conroe, the Falcons' leader in double-doubles this season, came up just short of another, scoring eight points and collecting eight rebounds on the day. Freshman teammate Allyah Marlett picked up a game-high nine rebounds for Air Force, increasing her season rebounding average to 5.8, the most by any freshman.
Sophomore point guard Briana Autrey-Thompson dished out a team-high five assists while also scoring six points and snagging six boards. Haley Jones dropped five points, grabbed five rebounds picked off three steals. Sophomore teammate Riley Snyder contributed with three steals a bucket and an assist on the day.
The Lobos had five players with double-figure scoring marks, led by Ahlise Hurst's and Jordan Hosey's 13 points apiece. New Mexico's significant contributor was Jayla Everett who notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists.
Air Force shot its lowest free throw percentage of the season (.313) while being held to its lowest scoring mark of the year (53).
The Falcons played their best ball in the opening 10 minutes, gaining as much as a five-point lead after a 7-0 scoring run heading into the final minutes of the quarter but New Mexico was able to battle to a 17-17 tie by the end of the first. The Lobos began to find their rhythm in the second quarter, going on a 13-2 scoring fun over five minutes while Air Force struggled to hit shots, putting up just 11 points. At the halftime horn, the Lobos led the Falcons, 42-28.
New Mexico carried the momentum into the second half, pacing the Falcons by 10 points through the quarter. A three-pointer from Nikki McDonald cut the Lobos' lead to as little as seven, but New Mexico was able to respond and rebuild their scoring buffer. At the end of the third, the Lobos led by 15 points, 55-40. The Lobos started to walk away with the game in the fourth quarter, opening up with a 7-0 scoring run and building a 23-point lead by the fourth quarter media timeout (4:21). Air Force closed the game on a scoring drought that lasted nearly three minutes long, failing to sink a shot until the final three seconds of the regulation.
Next up, Air Force travels to Boise, Idaho, to take on defending Mountain West Conference champions, Boise State, at 7 p.m. MT, Wednesday (Jan. 15).
