Air Force Rally Comes Up Short in 70-61 Loss at Boise State

Kaelin Immel led Air Force women’s basketball with a season-high 28 points
BOISE, Idaho - An explosive Air Force rally came up short in the final minutes against Boise State as the Falcons fell to the Broncos, 70-61, Wednesday evening in ExtraMile Arena. Air Force (4-13, 2-4 MW) overcame as much as a 19-point deficit to come within one point of tying Boise State (13-6, 5-2) in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter.
Junior co-team captain Kaelin Immel led the Falcons with a season-high 28 points. She scored 15 in the fourth quarter alone which was more than any other player, Broncos or Falcons, had all game. Immel shot 50-percent from deep and 41-percent from the field on the game while adding three assists and a steal her final stat line. The native of Beaverton, Oregon, now averages 15.5 ppg and has four 20-point performances this season.
Junior co-team captain Emily Conroe was just shy of a double-double yet again, scoring nine points and collecting nine rebounds. Conroe was perfect from three-point range (3-3) and at the free throw line (2-2). She also registered two assists and a steal on the night.
Sophomore forward Riley Snyder scored 10 points off the bench with two rebounds and an assist. Sophomore classmate and point guard Briana Autrey-Thompson registered a team-high five assists while scoring six points and picking off two steals. Air Force forwards Nikki McDonald and Haley Jones made their contributions in the paint, picking up seven and six rebounds, respectively.
The Falcons' defense was noticeably effective in disrupting Boise's offense, causing 18 Bronco turnovers leading to 22 Air Force points off of lost balls.
Boise State was led by Riley Lupfer and Mallory McGwire with 14 and 13 points, respectively. McGwire registered a double-double, collecting a game-high 11 rebounds. Jayde Christopher was the Broncos' leading playmaker as she dished out 13 assists and scored eight points.
The Air Force defense was high pressure through the first quarter, forcing Boise State turnovers and collecting defensive rebounds; however, there was no reciprocity on the offensive side of the ball as the Falcons were scoreless in their first seven attempts from the field. Air Force's first bucket was scored by Kamri Heath five minutes into the game. At the media timeout (2:34), the Broncos led the Falcons 14-6. Air Force's shooting improved after the media timeout as co-team captains Kaelin Immel and Emily Conroe each knocked down three-pointers in succession, bringing Air Force within two points of the lead. At the end of the first quarter, the Broncos led, 17-13.
The tone of Air Force's offense changed in the second quarter as the defense maintained the pressure and the shots started to fall for the offense. The Falcons stayed within a few points of the lead through the quarter, even taking the lead for two minutes behind Conroe who was 2-2 from deep in the first half. Air Force hit a lull in shooting near the halftime horn, missing seven straight attempts to close the half on a four-minute scoring drought but still only trailing by three points, 27-24.
Immel gave the Falcons a burst of energy as she drained a three-ball straight out of the break to knot the game at 30; however, the Broncos responded with a 8-0 scoring run in a minute and an 11-1 run over two minutes before the Air Force sideline called a timeout (7:17). Braydey Hodgins and Riley Lupfer turned up the heat from deep, shooting 4-4 from beyond the arc in the first five minutes of the second half. At the media timeout (4:40), Boise State led the Falcons 43-30, shooting 75-percent from the field and 80-percent from deep while Air Force was shot 20-percent in 10 attempts. By the time the third quarter horn sounded, Air Force was shooting 25-percent from the field and trailing by 16 points, 51-35.

The Falcons began to take flight, firing off a 17-2 scoring run in just under three minutes, making the Broncos' sideline call a timeout in an attempt to quell an erupting Air Force offense. The Falcons battled to within one point of the Boise State lead, 62-61, behind a rowdy Kaelin Immel and company.
With two minutes remaining in the game, Boise State dug deep for a response and bucket by hard-fought bucket regained the lead by way of an 8-0 scoring run to the final horn.
Next up, the Falcons head north to take on in-state rivals, Colorado State University, Saturday (Jan. 18) in Moby Arena, Fort Collins, Colorado. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. MT.
