U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Alex Schilling made 26 saves as Air Force earned its first conference victory with a 2-1 win over Bentley in an Atlantic Hockey Association game Friday, Nov. 12, at the Cadet Ice Arena.
After a scoreless first period, Bentley's Cole Kodsi had a breakaway early in the second period and was taken down on the play, leading to a penalty shot. However, Alex Schilling stopped the penalty shot with his right pad to keep the game scoreless.
Air Force (3-5-1, 1-1-1 AHA) used that momentum to take the early lead about three minutes later. Parker Brown made a long outlet pass right on the tape of Will Gavin at the far blue line. Gavin netted his team-leading fifth goal of the season at 5:34 as Mitchell Digby also assisted. Two minutes later, Air Force took a 2-0 lead on Sam Brennan's second goal of the season, and second in his last two games. Andrew DeCarlo won a faceoff in the offensive zone and Blake Bride poked the puck to Brennan at the center point. His shot snuck through a screen by Brian Adams at 7:50. Late in the period, Bentley (4-6-0, 2-3-0 AHA) got on the board at 17:22 with a power-play goal from Matt Lombardozzi. Matt Gosiewski and Brendan Hamblet assisted as Lombardozzi scored with a wrister from the top of the left circle.
Air Force held the 2-1 lead late into the third period. Bentley pulled its goalie with 1:20 remaining but the Falcons killed it off without allowing a shot on goal.
"I loved our energy tonight," head coach Frank Serratore said. "There's a lot to feel good about tonight. Our enthusiasm and spirit were great. We were not a fun team to play against tonight. Bentley didn't get much that we didn't give them. Alex Schilling was great and especially when we needed him to be great."
Air Force outshot Bentley, 33-27. Air Force was 0-for-6 on the power play while Bentley was 1-for-5. Nicholas Grabko made 31 saves for BU.
The same two teams conclude the conference series on Saturday, Nov. 13, at 5:05 pm MT at the Cadet Ice Arena.
