U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Sacred Heart goalie Josh Benson made 24 saves as the Pioneers defeated Air Force, 3-1, in an Atlantic Hockey Association game Saturday, Nov. 20, at the Cadet Ice Arena. The two teams split the two-game series as the Falcons won 3-2 in game one on Friday.
Sacred Heart (4-5-3, 2-2-2 AHA) broke a scoreless tie with 38 seconds left in the first period. Troy Conzo carried the puck out of the corner and dropped it for Conner Hutchison at the center point. Hutchison's point shot was redirected by Todd Goehring for a 1-0 lead.
Air Force (4-7-1, 2-3-1 AHA) tied the game late in the second period. Bennett Norlin won a loose puck behind the net and Brian Adams skated out to the top of the right circle. His shot was redirected by Blake Bride at 14:49. Bride collected his first goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1. SHU answered quickly as Goehring's shot was blocked, but Patrick Dawson put back the rebound for a 2-1 lead at 16:18.
Early in the third period, with the Falcons were on the power play, but Dawson controlled the puck in his own end and sent a long outlet for a short-handed 2-on-1 rush. Kevin Lombardi scored from Neil Shea at 6:27 for a 3-1 SHU lead.
"We took some avoidable penalties and, because of that, we spent a lot of energy killing penalties," head coach Frank Serratore said. "We gave up the first goal again and we got out special teamed tonight. Our young guys have to learn how to manage the game better. Give Sacred Heart credit, they played a sound game and didn't give us much."
SHU outshot Air Force, 27-25, in the game. Each team was 0-for-4 on the power play. Air Force senior goalie Alex Schilling made 24 saves.
After a day off on Sunday, Air Force and Sacred Heart play again on Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 22-23, at the Cadet Ice Arena.
