U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Four different Sacred Heart players scored as the Pioneers defeated Air Force, 4-2, in an Atlantic Hockey Association game, Monday, Nov. 22, at the Academy's Cadet Ice Arena.
Sacred Heart (5-5-3, 3-2-2 AHA) scored two goals in a three-minute span in the first period. In a 4-on-4 situation, John Jaworski won a faceoff in the offensive zone and Andrius Kulbis-Marino scored with a wrister from the left point at 12:35. Todd Goehring gave the Pioneers a 2-0 lead at 15:31 on a 3-on-2 rush.
The Pioneers scored early in the second period for a 3-0 lead. Adam Tisdale won a faceoff in the offensive zone and Ryan Steele scored with a backhand at the top of the crease at 1:28. Midway through the period, Marino was called for a checking from behind penalty for a hit on Luke Rowe and was given a game misconduct. After a Falcon penalty expired, Air Force had a four-minute power play. The Falcons had six shots on goal and Parker Brown put the Falcons on the board at 15:58. Sam Brennan slid the puck to Mitchell Digby on the right side. Digby's shot was saved, but Brown put back the rebound for his second of the season. However, late in the period, Tisdale's pass gave Lombardi some open ice on the left side. Lombardi's third of the season put SHU up 4-1 with 36 seconds left in the second.
Air Force (4-8-1, 2-4-1 AHA) rallied in the third period as Digby scored his first career goal. Digby carried the puck in the zone to start the play. Jacob Marti gave the puck to Lucas Coon on the goal line. Coon found Digby in the right circle for his goal at 13:16.
Air Force outshot Sacred Heart, 34-22, in the game. The Falcons were 1-for-7 on the power play and killed all five of SHU's man-advantages. Josh Benson made 32 saves for the Pioneers. Alex Schilling started the game and made 14 saves while allowing four goals in two periods. Junior Austin Park played the third period and made four saves.
"The better team won tonight," head coach Frank Serratore said. "They are an old, veteran team, but our guys battled. We won that third period and saved some pride. We will regroup and rally tomorrow. We really like our group, we are just green."
The two teams split the first series, Nov. 19-20, with Air Force winning game one, 3-2, and SHU winning game two, 3-1. The final game of the series is Tuesday, Nov. 23, at 5:35 pm MT at the Cadet Ice Arena.
