COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.- Opening the home portion of its 2022 schedule, Air Force strutted its stuff against the visiting Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves, winning Friday's dual meet 193.375-186.475.
"The team came out with confidence and enthusiasm from warmups," said head coach Jennifer Green. "I couldn't be more proud of their entire effort and fight."
It was a star-studded day for freshman Ayla McKean, who won the all-around with a 39.100, easily a personal-best score in a still blossoming career. Her all-around score is the high among the Falcons to this point of the 2022 season. McKean took first-overall in the vault, garnering a 9.675. She shared the top-spot in the bars with Alaska-Anchorage's Alyssa Manley after posting a 9.825, as well as finishing second in the floor exercise (9.825) and third in the balance beam (9.775).
Meanwhile, reigning MPSF Freshman of the Week Genevieve Sabado was sterling again for Air Force. Sabado crafted a 9.850 following her balance beam routine, good for first-place as well as topping her previous best of 9.800. The freshman finished just behind McKean in regards to the all-around crown, managing a 38.900 overall score, her highest all-around score thus far.
Cameo Stapleton was the queen on the floor, as her routine became a career-best. Stapleton's work in the floor exercise resulted in a 9.875, good for first-overall and a new career-high. Briona Carswell returned to form, amassing a season-best 9.800 on the balance beam.
Amber Boll helped to solidify the Falcons following her routine on the uneven bars, scoring a 9.800, while freshman Velandra Brochi qualified for the all-around for the first time in her collegiate career, putting together a 37.700 overall number.
"It was exciting to see them come into their own," said Green. "We are moving in the right direction...forward focused."
Air Force was the crisper side for the majority of the evening, as the Falcons saw their gymnasts in the top three in three of the four events.
Next, women's gymnastics will have Saturday to recover as Air Force hosts Alaska-Anchorage and UC-Davis in a tri-meet on Sunday, January 30. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm MT.
