U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo – It was a packed crowd in the Cadet West Gym for the Air Force women's gymnastics team's season debut against San Jose State in which the Falcons opened stronger than ever, but ultimately fell against San Jose State, 195.250-194.150.
The Falcons, despite the loss, opened their season without scoring any falls in the opening four rotations of 2023 and topped SJSU in the floor exercise behind a 48.825-point performance. In the rotation, freshmen Kylee Greene and Sarah Willis made their career starts, posting 9.825 (T2) and 9.625 respective points to help claim a team win in the event.
To couple with her floor performance, Greene posted top-five results in vault (T4, 9.700) and beam (T4, 9.800).
Senior Amber Boll notched a second-place performance on bars, scoring a 9.800 along with tying Greene on balance beam (9.800).
In the floor exercise, sophomore Briona Carswell tied Greene's 9.825, with sophomore Velandra Brochi claiming fifth in the event, pulling a 9.800.
194.150 marks the program's highest scoring season opener ever, and the third-consecutive debut under the tenure of head coach Jennifer Green in which the composite score for the Falcons has improved.
Coach Green on the Falcons' Season-Opening Performance:
"I was really impressed with the composure that the team had from start to finish. We came out strong - we have talked a lot about having the courage to fail, so if you have to start out big and then own that. And if you make a mistake, then you make a mistake. (The team) really did own that demeanor. I really couldn't be more proud of them.
"I was just really proud of everyone today – from the folks moving mats, to cheering – the bench is just as important as the lineup. Everyone came out and performed, and I'm walking away happy."
On Friday, Air Force heads to Denton, Texas for a tri-meet at Texas Women's University against host TWU, Centenary College and Wisconsin Eau-Claire.
