U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Alaska-Anchorage goalie Jared Whale made 32 saves to lead the Seawolves to a 3-1 win over Air Force, Friday, Oct. 20, at the Avis Alaska Sports Complex in Anchorage, Alaska.
The Falcons (2-3-0 overall) had a 7-1 shot advantage in the first six minutes, but it was the Seawolves that struck first. Aiden Westin redirected a shot by Carson Kosobud at 6:37. It appeared as though the Seawolves took a 2-0 lead on a goal by Riley Thompson, but the goal was disallowed due to offsides after a coaches' challenge.
Midway through the second period, the Falcons tied the game on the power play. Parker Brown and Andrew DeCarlo set up Mitchell Digby at the left point and the junior defenseman tied the game at 9:10 on his first goal of the season. UAA answered as Matt Allen put back a rebound of Thompson's shot at 13:16. With less than five minutes left in the second period, a pair of penalties were called on Air Force, giving UAA a 5-on-3 for 1:44. Junior Austin Schwartz blocked four shots and Guy Blessing made a pair of saves to kill the Seawolf advantage.
The Seawolves (3-2-0 overall) held the one-goal lead until late in the third when the Falcons were called for a too many men on the ice penalty. On the power play, Brett Bamber's shot from the center point went off the post and in with 6:58 remaining. Air Force pulled the goalie with 2:35 remaining and had four shots on goal, but were unable to find the back of the net.
Air Force outshot UAA, 33-24, in the game. Each team was 1-for-4 on the power play. Guy Blessing made 21 saves for the Falcons.
"We chased the scoreboard all night," head coach Frank Serratore said. "It is hard to win a game when you can't win a period. They have a good and competitive team. We did have a few things go our way, like when we killed that 5-on-3. But we ran into a hot goalie. He was really good. Early in a season, teams either find ways to win close games or find ways to lose them. Saturday's game is massive. We need to bounce back."
The two teams conclude the two-game non-conference series on Saturday, Oct. 21, at 5:05 pm AT in Anchorage. The game will be broadcast on AM 740 KVOR in Colorado Springs.
