U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, COLO. – The Air Force women's tennis team opened its final home weekend in resounding fashion, downing Boise State, 4-1, on Friday afternoon.
Air Force (8-8, 4-1 MW) quickly moved out to a 1-0 lead over the Broncos as Sydney Fitch/Alexis Odom (court one) and Isabella Flodin/Abby Cotuna (court two) respectively earned 6-0 and 6-1 wins, claiming doubles for the Falcons in just under 28 minutes of play.
Prior to Friday, Boise State had won seven-straight doubles points leading up to Friday's competition. Air Force improves to 13-3 in doubles as a team in a best-of-three format.
Freshmen Cotuna and Arianna Van Houweling continue to anchor Air Force in singles play, as the two struck first, each earning straight-set wins to push a 3-0 Air Force lead. On court five, Cotuna defeated Shauna Heffernan, 6-2, 6-0 for her fourth-straight win to improve to 5-4 in dual play; Van Houweling downed Boise State's Nicole Discenza, 6-1, 6-2, to build a four-match win streak of her own, improving to 11-3 this spring. All 11 of Van Houweling's wins have come in straight sets.
It was Odom on court three who dealt the final blow, claiming victory in a three-set battle over Boise's Holly Stewart. After splitting the first two sets, Fitch dispatched of Stewart, winning 6-1 in the deciding set to clinch the 4-1 team victory.
Thoughts From Coach Gidley:
"What a great effort for our team today. I was so proud of how well all three doubles teams took care of business to earn the doubles point for the fifth-straight match. Boise has strong doubles, so that really set the tone for the match for us.
"For the singles, our players fight for each other and win for each other. I got to hand it to Boise for such a great battle in the singles. Every match went the distance today, but that is what you would expect in our conference. Boise is well coached and fights hard, so I am excited for our players to come away with a win as a team today."
